Comodo issues to resolve

    Hi,

I recently installed Comodo AV and am having some issues with it. I hear it's rated #1, so I'm not ready to give up on it yet. I would love it if someone could help me with these.

    First issue-
Comodo AV will not connect to update it's database. My internet connection is working, and I am using Comodo's DNS service as well.

    Second-
Windows Security center isn't recognizing Comodo as a firewall, and thus informing me that my computer is not protected by one. I was under the impression that Comodo AV has a built-in firewall, though I see nothing within Comodo that specifically says "Firewall."

    Third-
I'm sure there were three issues, but I can't think of any others at this point. If I remember it I will include it in a later reply.

So, please, ask me some questions, give me some suggestions, and let's get this thing up and running!:major

If you have a white shield with a green checkmark on the right side of your taskbar, you should have the firewall.Should be green and red markings for incoming and outgoing on your connection.
Don't use the AV myself. (Avira fan).

You probably downloaded stand alone antivirus from comodo.
Uninstall it and download Comodo Internet Security with both av+fw (with option to choose only one).

    OK, that's a start.

I do have the white shield with green check, however-

I see NO Red/Green ticks occuring during activity- though I believe I saw those when I was running JUST Comodo Firewall (I uninstalled it to install the AV/FW combo package).

Also, I've found that Comodo seems to be interfering with some function that I have listed as safe, my Dropbox- Dropbox doesn't respond when I right-click on the tray icon and select 'open dropbox folder.' Each time I try this Defence+ blocks it as 'suspicious activity.'

Next time it happens, check Comodo for an option to "Treat as a trusted application"

I added a custom policy to Comodo to treat Dropbox as a trusted app. There was no change in behavior.

    Comodo continues to-
block dropbox from sending a message to Csrss.exe
...blocks explorer from accessing memory, then
...blocks dropbox from sending a message to Csrss.exe again.

Sorry I can't get any screenshots at the moment- I'm working remotely.

But all this is just a an annoyance. An inconvienence at worst. I'll gladly work on this one later- after I resolve the two main issues-

    AV wont update.
Win Sec Center wont recognize the firewall.

Yep, I did that. :-o I was suspicious about that. I download and installed only Comodo AV.

The links in the majorgeeks forum under ‘protecting yourself from malware..’ that I followed to download Comodo were confusing- the way the descriptions were worded I believed that each was taking me to the intended CIS download.

Then, at the Comodo site the descriptions lead me to believe that downloading the AV or FW would include options for both.

Well, I poked around and figured out to download CIS. I’ve now uninstalled the CAV and installed the CIS. (All this after I already downloaded, installed, and uninstalled CFW!) Unfortunately, I can’t tell you anymore at this point because Comodo is started up fresh, and I’m working remotely and can no longer access my PC! :confused

I’ll get back again this evening and check it out.

I expect to see the Win Sec Center issue resolved, but don’t have such a good feeling about the AV update or the dropbox.

Hi mjb, I hope my older thread did not give you the impression that Comodo AV was rated #1. Most AV's were rated as "VULNERABLE" :cry (see AV link below)

My thread on FIREWALLS rated Comodo Firewall as #1.
    (see attachment in post #1)

It does not include an AV.

There are 3 separate programs. Firewall, AV and Comodo Internet Security (which combines FW+AV-- as mentioned in an earlier post)

    Hopefully it does.

OK, CIS is installed and running OK.

    Issues-
    1. Win Sec FW issue resolved- WSC shows I have a valid firewall.
    2. AV still will NOT update.
    3. Adobe will not update, or uninstall. I have screenshots.
    4. Dropbox still will not open from the tray, but is otherwise working fine.

What can I do at this point to address the AV update first, then the adobe?

I'm also going to try getting support from Comodo too

    What OS are you running?
First 2 look like Vista saying you don't have permission.
Try right clicking and see if you get a "Run as Administrator" option.

XP SP3. And I do have administration rights on the user account I'm on.

I've been poking around on the Comodo site, and trying to get help from them, and this seems to be a common problem. There are quite a few people there who's AV wont update.

What's worse, I haven't seen any of them indicate that the situation was resolved- they're all unistalling it and going back to program that they had previously been using; and Comodo seems to be in denial that THEY have an issue.

I've been trying to capture a packet for a volenteer to review, but wireshark is not working for me either.

I don't have much hope left for this situation. Now considering Microsoft Sec Essentials, on a tip from a friend.

I have no direct experience of Comodo's security products, but having seen the catastrophic effects their Comodo Time Machine can have on a system I wouldn't touch any of their other products with a bargepole.

That's actually the first bad thing I've heard anyone say about Comodo- not that I've been around here all that long...

I'm not messing around with this any longer. Over this weekend ComodoIS is coming out, perhaps I'll keep their FW. And MSE is going in (I just hope I have no issues with that too!).

I've been messing around with this computer far too long. My spouse downlaoded a virus or malware several weeks ago, and I've been stuck on this machine day and night ever since. I thank the folks here who helped me clean the machine out.

Now I'm just wasting time messing around with legit programs that are SUPPOSED to work. :mad :banghead

If it is on a computer for someone who doesn't do tweaking and yet has to remain safe (protecting them from themselves) then MS Security Essentials is the ticket.

If you search here for Comodo problems, you will find threads from a few years ago. Those threads turned me off ever trying a product Comodo offers. I'll stick to things that mostly work; every program can have glitches. I don't expect perfection but I do expect minimal problems and solutions in a timely manner.

Don't use their AV or TimeMachine.
Do use the firewall. Very good defense.
Consistently one of,if not the top, performers in the firewall selection. Most times even outperforms the "pay for" programs.

Thanks. I may do that. I've uninstalled the CIS, and put in MSE, currently using windows firewall again.

My drop box started working again from the sys tray while I still had CIS running- not sure why though, must have been unrelated.

Also, my adobe still will not update or uninstall- because I don't have access to the registry path, apparently. I'll post that in another thread though (I had previously believed it was related to the CIS).
