    Hi

Likely as you have been trawling the net for answers you have done the below but just some thoughts on this that you may not have.

What Service Pack is your XP at?

    1. Check for updated Chipset driver and video card driver.
    2. Check to see if a BIOS update "may" have listed a fix for CPU temp reporting, dont update the BIOS if it doesnt fix a temp/reporting issue as a BIOS update can seriously cause problems with your PC if it is not done correctly.
    3. What security applications do you have installed? try disabling your antivirus and antimalware applications then try the tv pen.
    4. Boot into Safe Mode and see if the same issue happens, if not then one of your startup apps maybe the cause, so use msconfig and its startup tab and disbale all startups and reboot, and test, if it doesnt cause issues, then one at a time enable and reboot to see if you can find the app that is possibly causing some strain on your CPU.
    5. Have you cleaned out the inside of your PC of any dust, expecially the air vents, CPU heatsink and fan.

yes as you say i,ve checked most of what you said , this problem seems specific to d530 , i have flashed the latest bios 2.44 a year ago , it may be because its small form factor , the fan is blowing out of the side and the pc is close to the wall and the wall is very warm, so it may need more vent space and your last point has come up a lot dust, and dust inside the fan , also cpu cement and heatsink , BUT i saw an article on hp,s support site about cpu fan and pc slowing down/freezing and i was downloading ac97 codec at the time and thought i,ll read that later but now i cant it,its so annoying as its a throw away from my work and its very capable for what i want it for , digital tv and the net.
i,ll try the dust thing , give it more ventillation ect

    thanks for your thoughts

    Hi

Yes excessive dust build up will tend to send the CPU into throttle down mode and could even freeze, so a good cleanup of the dust from CPU and HSF would be great, also do any case fans and their fins as dust build up on them will make them less effective.

If the case has any space for extra fans, then I would be tempted to add a fan to that area, especially in the from to draw cooler air in, tidy up your cables inside the case as messy cables can cause dead zones of warm air as the flow of air is blocked.

What are the temps you are getting on CPU. Motherboard etc, this app should help HERE

well can you believe it , dust , hp and compaq are built like tanks , i work in aviation so i know when somethings solid, dependable , but their like german cars over engineered i have 3 530,s at home 2 showed signs of this problem and the one i but this one had never been pushed , so the usb tv stick outed it , they all have the same promlem , a solid cpu heatsink , i mean solid, vents all round the case, and dust collecting all around the cpu and at the bottom of the heatsink fan, so the fan sucks and sucks , the processor gets hotter and slower , i am typing this and running online tv, its like a completely different machine , its doing what youd expect from a 2.8 intel.

thanks and thanks to all that showed an intrest

Indeed build quality is paramount and I know of the aircraft industies relentless quest for perfection always. German cars well... hit and miss but good you have reliable ones.

Great on the PC now working as it should and cheers for getting back to us that all is seeming to be well now, its always great to have users feedback on a given issue and if it is resolved.

    Cheers :)

This cpu fan came out of a desktop PC where the fan was running at max speed most of the time and driving the owners a little bit crazy!

PC cleaning? they never heard of it! :cry:cry:cry

I washed out this heatsink, cleaned the fan and reinstalled the unit into the PC. The fan only runs intermittently now and then only at a low speed.

Your problem may be exactly the same.....a dirt packed CPU heatsink.
Check it and clean it out if need be.

This has been your Tech Tip of the day.;) :-D:-D

    Cheers mates!

remove the sticker/plug from the bottom of the fan and then put some kind of oil in there

replace the sticker / plug or tape over it
old trick I used to use on old fans
