Recurrent Issue in CCleaner's Registry Function

Whenever I run the Registry function on CCleaner (version 2.34.1200) on my laptop (Acer Aspire 5920 running MS Windows Vista HP SP2) the following is always reported. This seems a bit suspicious to me, although it may be entirely innocent. Can anyone comment on this? Is it OK? Is it suspicious?

In CCleaner’s Registry function in the Problem column: Missing MUI Reference

    In the Data column: @%SystemRoot%\system32\oobefldr,-33057

    In the Registry Key column:
    HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache

    Thanks!

    Hi

That MUIcache area in the registry is generally where, when you start an app up it caches up its shortcut etc for quicker opening later, now in cases I have seen where this continually pops up in the likes of CCleaner (once known as Crap Cleaner) it is down to corrupted app that loads on startup.

So to rule out a startup, click Start > Run and type msconfig and the Startup tab, then disable everything, and reboot is the registry key still found? if not enable one app and reboot, and check again, and so on until you find an app that adds this registry key in ccleaners scan and please name the app or startup.

as oobe is Out of Box Experience and linked to activation of XP or various Windows wizards, your not using any method to bypass say activation/WGA or blocking the update if Internet Explorer 6/7 to IE8 or have a script installed to say block USB pens from automatically opening (not saying at all you have a hooky version of Xp, just some of the block to stop WGA can cause this to flag each boot and clean with CCleaner or the likes. to the other apps to block certain things like USB from autorunning) and as such you can have CCleaner ignore it (options > exclude >add click Registry and paste in the HKEY link HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache)

oobefldr,-33057 is Learn Windows Features and likely one of the help wizards, but why it would continue to pop up, dunno offhand.

But I would also just do a malware scan of your PC, Malwarebytes or SuperantiSpyware are good. If anything nasty found then run our Read and Run me in the Malware forum and start new thread their and attach logs.

What Antivirus application do you have installed as well as any other security apps?

    Thanks, I've learnt something new.

I will try this soon - sounds easy but time consuming.

My version of Windows is Vista, not XP.

I have run both these applications and they've both reported a clean pc.

Antivirus = avast! Free Antivirus (Version 5.0.594)
Other security apps= SPAMFighter (version 7.1.55), SpywareBlaster (version 4.3) and SpywareGuard (version 2.2.0)

Are these instructions the same for Windows Vista (you seemed to think I had XP)?

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Affirmative - in Vista, you may get a UAC warning, but just say yes...

    It's quick and painless...

Yeah as Caliban mentions, no idea why I thought you had XP must have been on autopilot.

With it kicking in all the time, it sounds like a startup app causing an issue, also could be a PC cleaning app if you have any others installed apart form CCleaner? eg. an app like Registry Mechanic, Uniblue apps or other registry and PC cleaners etc, do mention anything like these apps you have installed and have auto run or run manually.

The msconfig route to troubleshoot a startup app is easy but definatly a bit time consuming, so quick but not always going to highlight the app thats causing this is to enter Safe Mode (F8 at boot) and choose Safe Mode with Networking, to see if the same happens in Safe Mode.

No prob, just double checked in case method was different didn't think it would be as Microsoft doesn't change things that much.

No, only got CCleaner. I tend to follow advice from MajorGeeks. Use to have Comodo until read on MajorGeeks that Window's own firewall was OK. So I use Window's own firewall. Avast for my virus protection. I have SPAMfighter, SpywareBlaster, and SpywareGuard for malware protection. Use these based on things I've read on here. Probably don't need SPAMfighter because only use webmail and I think SPAMfighter's for things like Outlook, Thunderbird, etc. I also have two IOBit application's just to keep my machine 'clean', namely Advanced SystemCare and Smart Defrag. Will probably do the start up thing tomorrow when I have time.
