IE7/Scvhost 100% cpu and 80% memory?

I have been having problems with my computer for the past month. Internet connection getting dropped, freezing etc. I noticed that my cpu was 100%, and high memory usage. The task manage showed a Scvhost was the problem. Finally today I thought to look at the Event Viewer and see it is filled with Warnings, Errors and Critical messages that mostly seem to point to Internet Explorer.
I have multiple ID Events for:
407 - This program is using up too much system memory
    Explorer. Exe
    Windows Explorer
    407
    Scvhost.exe
    Host process for windows services
402 - This process is doing excessive disk activities and is impacting the performance of windows
The are a number of different file names sited.
203 - This device has caused a delay in the shutdown process
Again a number of different files names

There are a few others, but those three seem to be the most repeated. I am pretty sure there are no virus or malware issues. With the recent problems I have been running all kinds of scans.
    I have Windows Vista.
Any idea what is causing this or how to fix it?
    Thanks

I posted in malware and was told my pc is clean.
I run one av program Avast. I only have windows firewall.
I have tried Opera and Firefox, neither seem to cause the cpu spikes but both will freeze and give me IE errors, such as Internet Exporer cannot display this page.
Anytime I check the taskmanager it is always the scvhost that is shown at 99% cpu, but in the errors it normally points to Explorer.exe or Searchindexer.exe

I took a look at your logs in the malware forum and let mest comment on the below which came from your logs.
    Code:
    Total Physical Memory 446.69 MB
    Available Physical Memory 85.05 MB
You cannot properly run Vista or even Windows XP with so little memory available. If you wish to run Vista, you need to upgrade to at least 2 GB of memory.

Agreed. I'd only run a heavily tweaked XP SP1 or 2 with so little RAM, nothing newer.

@irishred513, in Taskman, right-click the offending svchost and choose 'go to services' - list the services that are highlighted please, it'll give us more of an idea of what's happening.

If you really must use a machine that slow, I'd advise spending a few days studying the tweaks and Windows services at Blackviper, very carefully ...

It is not too slow, it just does not have enough memory. ;) And Virtual memory settings are too low too
    Code:
    Available Virtual Memory 556.32 MB
    Page File Space 1.00 GB
This PC is likely spending all its time swapping out applications from memory to disk and because virtual memory and real memory are both too low, the PC is having lots of problems.

Not recommended. Most people who start playing with this wind up in the Malware Forum complaining about all kinds of things not working (like Windows Updates for one) and the problem is due to the end user shutting off services that they need. Leave the services alone. You don't need to tweak them ever. Just put in the proper amount of memory. Uninstall software you don't need. And don't run unnecessary startups, and lay off all the toolbars and browser addons and your PC will be much happier.:)

Thank you all for trying to help me! :)
Although, I am a little confused at where to begin....
chaslang, I have had this pc for about three/four years. It came with Vista installed and this problem is recent. Would those memory issue's be caused just by what I have installed/saved on my pc? Do you think just adding more memory should "solve" all these issues?

Three/four years ago it was Vista without any service packs and without all the other software and updates you have installed since. Memory requirements of long since changed and even the amount of memory that this PC was shipped with was inadequate to begin with for Vista especially since your on board graphics card is stealing 64 MB or more for it to use and a few more MB seem to be used for other things for your hardware to operate. Sorry but it was cheap low performance mother board.:( Current Windows Operating systems and likewise other software ( especially protection software ) require much more memory and really work better with newer dual or quad core mother boards. Older singe core PCs even with a 3 Ghz processor do not perform that well with current vintages of software. And your processor is Celeron which is also not a high performance chip.

It is quite simple, you need to bump your memory up to 2 or 3 GB and you need to make sure that the Virtual Memory also is increased by allowing Windows to manage it.

Also note that you do have to realize that many times there are other things that can also affect PC performance. File system corruption and registry corruption, driver corruption, hard disk problems, memory devices going bad....etc. Also sometimes you can have various software and or hardware conflicts that cause problems.

It's was a cheap computer, so I am not surprised. But up until recently, it always did what I needed it to. Ok, so I will buy some more memory and start saving for a new pc!
Thanks so much for your time and help. :)

Have you tried the Process Explorer suggestion from post #4? This program will show you what program/service is causing svchost to use that much CPU and memory.
