    Hi there,
Few days back with some virus problems, I had to format my Laptop and Reinstall the OS (WinXP). After reinstalling, I tried to upgrade the IE6 to IE8 but my PC crashed. I recovered it using System Restore Point.
Now I fear of upgrading IE for system crash. IS there any solution to this?

Sounds like you haven't cleared all your virus issues properly, click this link http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=208809 and follow all the instructions then repost onto the malware forum with logs required your OS and what you where doing when you started to have the problems !
Also explain what you've already done so far to rid the viruses !

You probably need to give a little more information about your system and the
error that occurred as well as the procedure you followed to do the update.

Do you have XP SP2 or XP SP3?

How much RAM is in your computer?

Can you give any info about any error message you may have seen?

How did you do the update - did you download and then try to install or
did you you go to Microsoft Update ?

Have you been keeping up with Microsoft High-Priority Updates?

Internet Explorer updates are usually provided as High-Priority Updates through Microsoft Update. You will have to use the IE browser for the MS Update web site.

After you have supplied this info, someone can probably help you with this.

Wouldn't formating the drive wipe it clean? Could a virus survive a hard disk format?

Why do a full format when you can follow a few procedures in the link provided and your done, that way you lose non of your data !

Great post and agree with what you posted mjnc, as if this is a pre SP2 version fo Windows re-installed, then quite a few pre-requsite updates will not be installed until at least SP2 or SP3 is.

Error messages are worth their weight in gold, so if you re-install IE8 again and you get error messages, then either write them down if they stay on screen long enough, or look in the Event Viewer logs (found in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer and look in the Application or System logs for a crash at the exact time of the crash and paste it into a notepad file and attach to a post by following these instructions HERE on how to attach files.

Can you also name all the security applications you have installed? like Antivirus, Firewall, Anti-malware etc

    Thanks Halo.
I think the key word here that you mentioned is prerequisite.
I believe you are saying that these other updates should be installed Before attempting an other upgrade to IE8.

Yes, and are they up to date, particularly the definitions.

    Dear All,
Thanks for everyones support. Let me answer one by one.

    1) I have MS Win XP Professional SP 2 v2096

    2) RAM = 1GB

    3) I forgot the error message, but after that message, I couldn't start my OS.

    4) To be frank, I don't have the genuine copy of XP; so not question of updates. I haven;t updated the XP after initial installation.

    5) I have BitDefender as AV which is updated till date and also has firewall in it.

    6) I have IOBit Security 360 Pro as anti-spyware and anti-adware, which is also updated till date.

    regards,

    Amit Vaidya
