No internet, but connection OK?

    Hi

I started this thread in the Malware Removal forum because my brother's been having trouble with his PC. While there was malware apparantly it's not the cause of there being no internet - possibly a hardware problem instead?

He has a Local Area Connection, which in the taskbar says it's connected with a speed of 100 Mbps. IE doesn't work though (nor Firefox), and the diagnostic report detects "a problem with the Winsock provider catalog", but following the diagnostic fixer doesn't work.

If it's a hardware problem how do I uninstall/reinstall any drivers etc.?

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Yes, try using the tool from Microsoft:

    http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9664547

It rollback to the basic TCP / IP config.

Are you sure you already deleted every malware from that computer?

    Tell su what happened.

    Hi

Thanks for your response. I've tried the tool you suggested but this hasn't solved the problem.

According to user chaslang in the Malware Removal forum the computer is now clean of all malware.

While he was helping me with that he mentioned the following about the Network problem:

    and

Do you think doing this would be a good idea? I'm not entirely sure of what I'd be doing though, so I'd need a bit more instruction.

    Thanks

    CMD

    In the black screen type:

    ipconfig /all

What appears? could you send me a screenshot of it?

OK, thanks. Yes, Windows XP (Service pack 3).

I ran through the first link, using "Method 2: Use the Msinfo32 program" and found about 15 sections headed with MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip...
so I ran the FixIt wizard to reset the Winsock and did it manually, with no improvement in the situation.

Also ran the malware tool, no problems there.

    Appreciate your help.

    Yes, did you tried

    Start > Run > cmd

    In the black windows type:

    sfc /scannow

Just to check system files to be Ok.

    Also ask this simple questions;

    1. Check all Network devices are enabled
    2. Start > Run > devmgmt.msc Is there any device with (!) Yellow Exclamation Mark?
    3. Also install other navigator as Mozilla Firefox to try navigate google.
    4. Start > Run > cmd In the black window type: ping google.com what happens when you do that?

    Hope u'll answer.

    Cheers.

My internet seems to be all OK now, although I have no idea what particularly it was which fixed it.
Thanks a lot for your help.
