I started this post here but it got moved to malware forum. I was told there is no malware on my computer and to take this discussion to the software forum. So, here I am. :) Please see below. I have loaded programs one at a time but cannot find the culprit.

Hi there! I purchased a new Gateway All-in-One ZX4300 a month ago and have had no problems. All of a sudden last night the cursor froze on me. I thought it was the battery in the mouse but it was not. I have paid version of AVG 9.0 and it froze while scanning, even in safe mode. I am unable to perform a system restore because it freezes, and I cannot open the event monitor without making it freeze, also. Computer will work with a clean boot but without any startup programs loaded.

Please help! I hate the thought of doing a "clean sweep" as it took so long for me to get this one set up with my transcription programs.

    Thanks in advance,
    Miki

  2. Is it after a given period of time? Or just completly random.

    Hi Miki,

It might be a good idea to let us take a look at the Windows Event logs, there may be some clues there.

Start > Control Panel, clicking System and Security > Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer, click the + next to Windows logs then right-click the System log and select 'Save all Events as'. Save this file as the default filename offered then zip the file and attach it to a reply please.

    Captain Qwerty,
It happens after it has reloaded. I have tried disabling all services and startup programs one at a time, but haven't been able to isolate the problem.

    Satrow,
I am unable to open the event viewer in safe mode. If I try to open it in normal mode, it freezes up. If you can tell me which service/startup program to load when I reboot to get to the event viewer, I will give it another try.

    Thanks a bunch!
    Miki

I did just try opening Event Viewer in safe mode and the computer froze up. Does this mean it is an operating system problem after all and not one of my other programs since I am in safe mode?

If you cannot open Event Viewer in Safe Mode, it may be hardeware-related - getting too hot, for example.

How hot does it feel? Can you install SpeedFan to check your temperatures?

I tried to install Speed Fan but it would not install in safe mode.

FYI, I did a clean reboot (no services or programs other than Microsoft) and while online it froze again. Should I move this to the hardware board?
    Thanks in advance,
    Miki

Forgot to add that it does not feel hot at all to the touch.

Probably a good idea. Link it back to the Malware and this Thread for ease of reference.

How do I link to thread?

No response from hardware thread at all. Which forum should I be posting in?

I guess the hardware forum is correct; give it a few more hours before bumping it, MG's have a lot of good people but they're spread around the globe and may not login everyday.
