This may be a very dumb question, but advice is appreciated.

I have a HP Pavillion laptop with Vista, and I would like to install Windows 7.
I can purchase it from Walmart, Newegg, or any place like that, but is it better to get it from HP ?

I have heard of so many compatibility problems. The HP does have 64 bit capability. I thought if I had problems with the installation or functioning, Hp would help me if I bought it from them. :confused

    All suggestions welcome.

    Hi

Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and see if you are going to have any issues with the HPs hardware as the main issues are drivers, but as you have Vista its less of an issue then going from XP to Win7 or any issues with your software or addon hardware like Printers etc

See how much HP are charging and if support is also with the purchase, if support is not then, the other stores are ok as with retail you get a new licence key to use and a clean install of Windows 7 has less issues than an upgrade.

Most applications these days work fine with Windows 7 and 64bit version, I've not had any major issues and I've been on Windows 7 for a long time, yes the odd older app that doesnt work but not that many. But check any of your favoured applications for compatability with Windows 7 if they dont they may still work (many will work in compatability mode) or then if not, there maybe alternatives that do the same job.

    Thank you very much Halo.

I am running the upgrade advisor tonight.

(I really miss London, and Bournemouth, used to live there. Hope you had a better summer than we did!).

    Thanks again,

Windows 7 supports "xp mode" which can be another alternative for old apps that refuse to run properly on win.7

Thanks for the info. I also have a Toshiba laptop with XP Pro on it. I am dragging my feet about letting XP go, because Vista is so bad.

    Thanks again,

    Melm,

For what it is worth, I have and HP Pavilion DV9907CA laptop. It was purchased two years ago and was running Vista. I ran the Microsoft Advisor and look good. I purchased Windows 7 Home Premium and it upgraded and works fine. Actually performs noticably better I might add.

    The Capt.

Why are you even mentioning Vista? If you were to upgrade from Win XP, why not go for Win 7 if the Win 7 Upgrade Adviser indicates that computer could run Win 7?

Probably because the OP is already on Vista. :-D

ooops, ignore my comment. The OP has a second PC on XP Pro. My bad.

    Thanks Captain Cormier.

Usafveteran, I have two laptops one with Vista Home Premium and the other with Vista Business, which I down graded to XP Pro. I have decided to buy a new computer with the windows 7. I will keep my 17" HP with the Vista Premium. The Toshiba is about 4 years old now and the CD drive is malfunctioning, so it is time for a new one.

Now my big decision is whether to get a desktop with a TV for the screen, or get another HP laptop, (19"). :confused

    decisions...decisions

From my experience most of the compatibility problems occur becuase someone tries to install a 64bit OS on a 32bit machine. It shouldn't any difference where you buy the installation disc from, however, if you buy it from hp then that disc will come preloaded with HP tools. Whereas the OS you buy from walmart is vendor neatrual.
