Hi - I need some help if possible. I have a desktop pc connected to a home network via cat 5 cable thru a 4 port netgear wireless router/modem. I have an old HP Jetdirect EX Plus3 connected via cat 5 cable to one of the netgear ports. Connected to the Jetdirect are two older printers - an HP laserjet 5p and an HP deskjet 5550. I recently disconnected the entire setup, moved to another room and reconnected. Everything worked before moving, desktop to both printers and printing from my laptop wirelessly to the HP 5p only (for some reason never worked with the HP5550) Now, after the move, nothing works. Documents sent to print error out. I'm not sure where to start - can you assist? Oh, I'm running XP SP3 on the desktop and Vista on the laptop.
    Thanks, Cal

Open the netgear setup and look to see if the router is assigning an IP to the print server.
If not, make sure the printer is on and on the wired computer, open a Dos box (start then run and type in cmd). At the command type in ipconfig /release and press enter. Then type ipconfig /renew and enter. Then check the netgear again to see if the print server now has an address.
If not, you may need to assign a static address for the print server. I've never done this so someone who has may be able to tell you what to do. Please mention the model of Netgear router so anyone who assists will be able to look at the manual online and tell you what to click.

Sorry, please forgive my ignorance. I am not finding a netgear folder or program anywhere - noting listed under start > all programs and no netgear folder under c:\Program Files. Am I not looking in the right place for the netgear setup? Netgear router model is WGR614v4. thanks

Hi - I tried everything on the netgear link you provided twice and I still could not connect to the netgear setup by typing http://192.168.1.1 into my browser. Any other thoughts? Could the netgear router be bad?
    Thanks,
    Cal

Hi - I kept messing with this after I logged off major geeks and got to a connection screen by entering http://192.168.0.1/ in my browser, but, I am prompted for a user name and password. I tried the standard ones I use but none worked. Is there a default one that I can use? I tried leaving both blank and that didn't work either. Thanks

Usually they come with a default username and password (assuming you haven't changed it, in which case you'll need to reset to default settings per the manual). It should be in the manual that you got with the hardware. Sometimes it is on a sticker on the device itself. You can download the manual from Netgear's website (www.netgear.com) if you don't have the hard copy anymore.

P.S. - You can try admin/admin or admin and no password. Typically, it's something like that.

OK, we're making some progress. The login was "admin" and the password was "password". It looks like the Netgear router is seeing the the HP JetDirect - it is assigned an IP address of 192.168.0.18 with a mac address of 00:60:b0:3b:81:d4 . But I still cannot print.....any further thoughts?
    Thanks

First thing I want you to do is please change the login username and password! If you do not, anyone who sees your wireless signal can get into your network.

Now if I understand, you have 2 printers: 5p and 5550.
I assume the software for both printers is installed on the desktop and the laptop.

Open the printer folder in desktop (XP) and check that the 5p is set as the default printer, if that is the one you want to use.
Can you print a test page? If not, is there any error message? Does the 5p have some sort of toolbox software?

    OK, login & password changed.
5p and 5550 are both loaded on the desktop, 5p only loaded on laptop.
5P is default printer on both pcs.
Printing a test page give a generic failed to print message.
5p does not have toolbox software.

Just a reminder, this whole set up worked without any issues before I disconnected everything and move to another room.

    Thanks

Can you check what IP address your printer is set to print to? (On either of the computers) If the router is set up for DHCP, the printer could have a different IP address.

You moved everything which is the same as a power outage.
When I have a power outage, I need to get my modem working first, then the router and last plug in my print server.

If nothing seems to be working, unplug modem, router and print server (it is enough to pull the power connector that goes to the brick from all three devices). Wait at least one minute. Plug in the modem first and when the lights that are supposed to be solid stop blinking, then plug in the modem. Last plug in the print server and power up the desktop. See if you can print.

I tried the power up sequencing suggested - did not cure the problem.

I did notice that when I hit the test button on the jet direct I get a test page printed on the 5P which I think tells me those two are talking.

How do I check for what IP address my printer is set to print to and if the router is set up for DHCP?

    Thanks

All that information is found in the router. Type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar, type in your username and pass.
In my linksys there ia something on the first window that says DHCP server. There is a buble in the Enable circle.
To get to IP assignments, I click on a section titled Status. Then I select Local Network and last, click a button which says DHCP Clients Table. The client host name shows all my computers name and the print server name along with the IP assigned to each.

    Thanks for your continued help.

When checking LAN Port in the router status, DHCP is ON. When checking the Internet Port in the router status, DHCP is set to DHCP Client.

When checking what devices are connected to the router, two show up (Laptop is not on presently). So, device 2 below should be the HP JetDirect.
    # IP Address Device Name MAC Address
    1 192.168.0.2 DELLP428GHZ 00:13:20:e0:f7:9a
    2 192.168.0.18 NPI3B81D4 00:60:b0:3b:81:d4
Since both printers are connected to the HP Jetdirect, I'm guessing the IP address for both should be set to 192.168.0.18 . Now for the really stupid question - how do I manually set the two printer addresses to 192.168.0.18? Or is this not the correct thing to do?

    Thanks,
    Cal

Pleae disregard my last question. I manually changed the printer addresses and they both now work.

    Thanks for all your assistance.

In Windows XP, select "Printers and Faxes" from your start menu.
In Windows Vista/7, select "Control Panel", then "Hardware and Sound", then "Printers".

Then, right click on the printer and select properties. On the "Ports" tab, there should be one port that is selected. It should include TCP/IP somewhere in the port name. It should also have an IP address with underscores instead of periods. (i.e. 192_168_0_31) If it's different than 192_168_0_18, then that's the problem. You should be able to highlight it and press "Configure Port" to change the IP Address. If that doesn't work, you might just try deleting the printer and reconnecting to it.

If you don't know how to reconnect to it, here is a link that should help.
