    What the f---?!?

People like that make people like you look bad by association...

Seriously, what kind of responsible gun owner would fire their gun where there is a chance it would hit an innocent idiot bystander like that? I have a lot of friends who collect guns the way I collect swords, and none of them would ever be stupid enough to do what's in that video. That's the whole reason I don't mind them owning guns at all. Because they're not morons.

    EDIT:
Just to reiterate, I treat my swords as deadly weapons and I do not unsheathe and swing them for fun. It offends me when dumb-asses like the people in that video won't treat their guns the same way... they seriously should know better, or they should be allowed to handle guns at all.

Totally agree with you Mimsy. One of the main rules of gun safety, know your target. Especially with that big of a bullet. The guy was hit by a fragment of the bullet. There are lots of stupid people. The interweb and youtube let us see them at a safe distance. :-D

Mimsy, just out of curiosity, have you taken any training with your swords? Been thinking about getting back in to the martial arts, and I think my former teacher does teach some sword stuff to the higher belts.

    Thank goodness it wasn't a LAW, or a bazooka...rolleyes

I read somewhere that samurai considered it sacrilege to unsheath a katana without it tasting blood - true?

Would make basic blade maintenance body intensive. :-D I think they were just very selective on when they drew a blade, and usually, if drawn in public, there was blood. I would guess the distinction might be drawing for training, and drawing in public. Much as I do with guns.

I don't go out in public and practice my trigger pull...;)

There are kendo classes in my past; meaning I have had training with a katana. I do know that several karate and aikido clubs offer sword instruction to those that earn it. I was never in that lucky minority... I went for kendo instruction right of the bat. ;)

    False.

They did consider it immature and stupid to unsheathe their sword without good reason, and that might be where that rumor you read came from. A samurai sees his sword as a extension of himself, he draws it to kill only when he wishes to kill. Swords are not toys or objects of intimidation. Using them in such a way diminishes them, and the purpose they were intended for.

I'm with you on this one. Just like you won't actually draw a gun unless it's necessary, a samurai would stay his blade unless he had to. His definition of what is necessary might be different from yours, but that doesn't mean your priorities are. Swords are unsheathed when they need to be, and NEVER for show. If you don't understand that, you shouldn't be allowed to own one.

Ditto. A weapon should not be brandished unless there is need . . . nor should any weapon be practiced with in an unsafe area or manner.

I agree with you on the safety aspects. But, when they do do it, and film it, and put it on the interweb, I will watch, and laugh at the folly. And I would not joke about it if anyone had been hurt.

Darwin is still around, he knows his 'peeps'. ;)

You may be confusing this with the Gurkha and his Kukri, It is his religious weapon and when they draw it (even to clean it) it has to taste blood so they draw it across their thumb before re-sheathing it,

'Bambo' has bad gun handling habits. Whoever was filming him is due a Darwin Award. Did not know you had posted it. ;)

    Firing at metal, not smart.

Not to argue but what exactly did he do wrong? You know there are all kinds of sporting shows where guns are fired at animals and whatnot, and they are filmed? Are you saying that they should have been back further, or that they shouldn't have been there at all?

He picked a target a bullet can bounce back from (in this case a fragment), and if he had been any closer, he could have been severely injured or killed. Or was it a mistake on my part to assume that doing your best to avoid a dangerous ricochet is a part of basic gun safety? :confused
