    hi all,

My sony vaio running windows vista home, 32, will allow for me to select shut down, however, it will simply start right back up. For the life of me, I'm unable to figure out why it won't stay off...

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks all,

    Murph

    Greetings, bmurphy688...

What service pack # is your Vista? And, did this just start after any updates were installed? Also, what antivirus software are you running?

No updates were installed prior to occurrence.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi

Just to see if anything is untoward in your startups, please follow the below as written.

Have you scanned for malware yet?

    Halo,

Yes, I scanned with Malware, quick scan, and nothing was found. I've run cc cleaner and attached txt as requested.

Thank you for taking the time to help.

I think Halo will agree: you've got an amazing amount of stuff starting up...I'll start digging into the list asap, as will others, but in the meantime, you might do some research towards trimming that startup list...

Also - can you boot into Safe Mode, and do a normal shutdown from there?

    Hey Murph,

You've attached the installed Programs txt, not the Startups txt, can you try again, please?

    No problem, Murph :)

    I'm suspicious of:
    "Yes HKCU:Run Artisan 810(Network) C:\Windows\system32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_FATIFRA.EXE /FU "C:\Windows\TEMP\E_S4EA1.tmp" /EF "HKCU""
it looks like it's running from a Temp folder (and a disk cleanup may erase the file).

Umm, yes, you really need to trim back this list ;)

For troubleshooting purposes, I think I'd disable all but the AVG entries and anything in HKCU:RunOnce. Probably best to use StartupCPL and use it from it's location in the Windows Control Panel to disable them.

Does StartupCPL work with Vista... Doesn't say if vista is one of the compatible windows versions.

When I try to install, installer states unable to find Starup.cpl.. I search laptop without any luck.

Thanks... And yes, I will narrow down the startup items. I'm considering a fresh install... however, i know how much time that takes, and I'd have a lot of software to reinstall. There is the BIG BENEFIT of a fresh install though.

    Thanks again.

You may need to install StartupCPL via Admin, right-click the installer and select Run as Administrator or temporarily disable the UAC. The StartupCPL should then be available in Control Panel.

That worked. Thank you very much. I keep forgetting the run as admin in vista.

Under Startup Common, there is one entry. Quickbooks Updater... When I uncheck the item, it reduplicates itself with a check mark... If I try to uncheck the new item, it says there's already an item with the same name...

    Is this right? Something strange?

Things like that tend to happen when the Prog is already running, either open the Prog and set auto-start with Windows to off or kill the Prog via TaskMan first.

Ok fellers... No luck on solving the rebooting issue. I've disabled items one by one through the entire list, and nothing solved the problem. I also tried booting to safe mode, then shut down... Computer would reboot.

I'm at a loss. Any other ideas?

    Thanks.

Couple of quickies you might try:

Go into Control Panel, System, Advanced Settings, Startup and Recovery settings (I'm on a W7 machine, but your path should be similar) - untick 'Automatically restart', and ok out of everything, check the reboot...I know, it probably has no bearing, but that setting should be disabled, anyway...

Another shot: can you get into BIOS? Maybe snoop around in there, especially anything having to do with what the machine should do when the power button is pushed...to be sure, the power button (or associated circuitry) can't be flaky, but I've seen stranger things...

Thank you for your help, unfortunately, the last advice was unsuccessful as well..

I'm stumped.. If you come up with anything, let me know. If I find it, i will post the solution.

    Stumped. :confused

Ok, now I am really stumped... I did a clean install of my laptop, prior to doing anything other than a clean install, tried to shut down the machine. no luck, came right back on... unchecked restart on error nothing..

anyone have any ideas at all??? I also found the idea of disabling wake on sleep in the network setting. no luck...

I'm stumped... I bought a new battery so at least I can make it to the shop without the machine dying...

The problem child is acting up again, eh?

You might try installing Service Pack #2 - seems like I read somewhere about some power problems being addressed.

The fact that the symptoms persist after a clean install would indicate a hardware and/or BIOS problem - dig into your setup, disable anything network related, and let's see if this thing's still trying to phone home somehow.

Quick question: what's the model #, service tag #, etc. of your machine?

  21. bmurphy688

    bmurphy688 Private E-2

    Ok, installed sp2, same problem...

Where would you like for me to poke around as far as the go home possibility?

The model is vgn-fz140e... Can't read the tag number anymore...

This has been a continuing problem for quite some time... It really irks me that it can't be solved...

    Any help is always appreciated..!

As far as the phone home, temporarily disable the network adapter in BIOS and in Windows, see if your symptoms change.

Browse through the Sony forums, see if there are similarities there.

Have you taken a look at your Event Viewer for any clues? Try setting up a timed test, maybe we can compare to another machine.

To get down to the nuts and bolts, my next step would be to reinstall the chipset and network drivers: VGNFZ140E eSupport - Sony uses the easy Intel routines, so the procedures should be painless. You might also browse through the files there, compare versions with your own installed software, see if there are any updates.
