Vista/Defender Conflict(s)??

I can not seem to get Defender to open in a recently reinstalled Vista (Home) OS (I bought it new from Dell in January 2008).

These are the error codes that I've been getting (in order), chasing-around on the web for a solution:

    1. 0x800106ba
    2. 0x800705b4
    3. 0x800106ba
    4. 0x800705b4

You may have noticed that #1 & #3 are the same, as are #2 & #4.

So whatever I've tried has only brought me back to square one (sometimes I think Bill Gates gets a thrill up his leg knowing that so much TIME is SPENT focusing on his creation).

I "currently" have MS Security Essentials for AV & AS protection, but Defender "should" still load, and I would very much like to have it for start-up program control - in addition to just having it as a backup program (seeing how it CAME WITH the system).

    Anyone game for this?

    Thanks in advance,
    g...

Thanks for the reply and the link, but "yes", I do...

The service won't start...rather, it starts and then immediately stops. Message says some will do that "if they are not in use by other services or programs"...

And when I attempt the final "fix" (#4 in your link), I get:

"Error - The Module "file" failed to load..."

Ok, maybe we're painting a picture here, and slowly figuring this out...

The remainder of that last error I mentioned goes-on to say:

"Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or the dependent .DLL files.

The specified module could not be found"
    .

I have no clue how to "make sure the binary is stored...", or how to "debug it", but I DID get some sort of ".dll" failure just the other day:

    "rundll32.exe (Version 6.0.6000.16386) ~ Stopped working" (attached).

I see nothing in my programs with that "version" number.

There is the option of course to keep MSSE for the AS protection it provides and control your startups with Startup CPL or CCleaner. I don't think I would feel confident that Defender is being maintained as it was superceded by MSSE so long ago.

Thanks - I'm simply utilizing Defender for it's Start-up program control...much less so for any Spyware protection (I do like "having it around" as a back-up or "secondary" [non-real-time] scanner).

My understanding (from reading here) is that while ccleaner is GREAT at what it does - in it's basic form (cleaning and registry checking/cleaning), it's not good to use for start-up control ~ and I'm using Vista, and I don't think Startup CPL is setup for Vista - is that correct?

    Thanks again,
    Glenn
