Fred_G mentioned that the fries are pre-salted around where he lives in Stubby's B-Day thread so this got me to thinking how we all enjoy this most popular 'vegetable'(not that he likes it over-salted as it seems to be)?

I like the twice fried thick cut fries and not these McD's type of cardboard, slap some vinegar on there to make the salt stick and to clear the nasal passages for the flavour to be appreciated to its fullest!:eek :yum

We also have 'Poutine', fries with fresh curd cheese and a strong beef gravy make a favourite Quebecer delicacy.

french fries are the staple diet of most Belgians they put all sorts of things on them, Flemish stew, mayo, ketchup, sauce americane (very hot) mango sauce (very sweet) and an assortment of others but strangely enough they do not put malt vinegar on them (very strange)

mmmm mayo on chips is tasty.... mango I had earlier but it was with popadoms.

Personally I like Augie like mine thick and with very very little salt and no vinegar at all..... whiel some like it kinda destroys the taste for me, not tried fries witj balsamic yet, may just try that next time I have fries (rare I have fries, Im a rice or pasta person)

The best ones I have had are from a local place. They slice the potato and fry the slices. 'Cottage Style' is what they call it. They really don't need much on them for me, but some ketchup works for me.

They look like this, but fried: http://www.ehow.com/how_5596180_make-fries-whole-unpeeled-potatoes.html

Actually, those baked ones look good. May have to try that one day. Would be a bit better without all the grease. Hmm, thinking about firing up the grill Monday, might cook them, and toss them on the grill for a smoky taste. :drool

Mind you they're just called FRIET and that's it!

I love french fries with piccalilly (sp?) The mayo used with the dutch french fries isn't as heavy as the mayo sold here and the taste is quite different as well. It's considered an art if you make them from scratch and to do it properly you have to fry them TWICE. The article in the link explains it.

Where I live and use to work fast food always salted the fries. Unlessed otherwise told to. And many times by the time the girl came back to tell me no salt, I had them done and salted. So re make them! Another thing is mayo pretty sure many don't eat this but try toast with mayo on it:p

There is something about a potato that I can never turn down. No matter how full I am you throw a hot plate of french fries in front of me you better believe I will be chowing down!

There is a place near me called Bigfoot steaks and hoagies. They make "Bigfoot fries". They are steak cut fries with melted cheddar, bacon and ranch dressing. :yum

Three of the coolest foods combined!
Fries, cheese and bacon. What more could you ask for?

I was going to mention what Bill illustrated for us. Those are just LOVELY :drool

I agree with Augie that it's vinegar first, so the salt adheres to the chips, and lots of salt! Also a big fan of chips and cheese, I recall having it as a school dinner alot :-D

All this is making me so hungry. I have some onion bhaji's in the fridge.. not quite chips, but it will suffice!

I must be the only person in the world who doesn't like chips or fries, its not that I can't eat them I just find them boring.I can't be bothered eating potatoes in general.

When I go to the local chippy I just get fish and peas or sausage and peas:yum

all that stuff you guys mentioned sounds good and all.. but Nothing compares to a Gaetan Poutine :)

3lbs. of the best home-made fries you can imagine..
    2 cups of gravy
    2 cups of cheese curds
    4 cut-up hotdogs
    2 cut-up chicken burgers

    all for $10 canadian :)

it will feed a family of 6 people easily with leftovers... lol

The poutine in the link is the "smaller" version at about 1lb. total weight for $3.95

Just to add to Nico's post, they have to be 'real fresh' cheese curds, like same day. It chews with a squeak. Real beef gravy and twice fried fries, I'm a purist.;))

    BTW, nice link to Gaetan's.:yum

Well "Freedom Fries" (just kidding) I love thick steak fries with ketchup, salt and pepper.

However, the OP suggested some vinegar. I might try that son.

I also prefer St. Albert's cheese curds over any other. they are truly the best curds in the world :) lol

I live in alexandia about 15 minutes away from St. Albert's, and i buy them by the 20lb. bag :-D

and yes, the more they squeak, the fresher they are..
