Initially one entire column of pixels stopped refreshing or functioning. Now, after several full height columns developed the same problem, there is an entire region of the screen that either doesn't refresh, refreshes sporadically, or occasionally still functions normally. I have attached a PDF of a smalll portion of a picture of the screen (the full screen PDF was too large to upload).

Is there a less expensive way to remedy the problem than buying a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 9300 with Windows XP Professional)? Can a monitor from another Dell Inspiron 9300 be used as a replacement? Can the original monitor be unplugged and a replacement plugged in or is there soldering required?

you might be better off buying a new laptop
that way it would be under warrenty if you had any problems within the warrenty time limit (one to two years);)

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

You might also make sure that the display is bad: have you plugged in another monitor to verify (most laptops have VGA connectors)?

If so, then Hugh's probably right: I just hit one page of a Google display search, and the prices were from $120-$175 - you can find good, complete machines now for that price.
