Hi, I was doing my usual thing online, using skype and yahoo messenger and watching a stream on the bbc website. My computer then just instantly froze up and all sound just got static and then within 1-2 seconds the bluescreen came up. It didn't show a error like is use to with the nvl error.

Just wondered what this could possibly be. I kept the Windows error box that came up when my computer rebooted just in case it provides anything that could be of some help.

If maybe getting a screenshot of the eventviewer or anything else is needed please do tell me.

    Thanks.

Have you reset your system to not reboot on errors so you can get the BSOD error message? Does it happen in safe mode? Is this only a one time occurrence?

Seems like Windows 7 isn't it?

    It's 64b or 32b?

Now, doing something different that you usually do it happens? What about if you just let the PC on and nothing running, also happens?

There's could be a bunch of problems, commonly RAM issues.

The best that you can do by the moment is make you sure there's no virus using the MG procedure:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

Also you could try cleaning your RAM Modules and checking the PC isn't getting overheat, just open the CPU and see if there's not so heat.

If you don't know how to do it, talk us and we'll see how to solve this.

The BSOD doesn't show something in particular.

Hey, no I didn't do that, nor do I know how to, so if you point me in the right direction in case for some reason I have done. Also no it is not the first time it happens, I get this a little bit too much for my liking now :(

    Windows 7 and 32bit

No I wasn't/don't do anything different when it happens, from watching streams online, music videos, using skype for voice and video and occasionally teamviewer. Also other applications run in the background, the obvious anti virus, malwarebytes, yahoo messegner and some other minor ones. As far a virus, I am almost certain I don't have one but will perform the MG procedure to make sure.

When you say cleaning RAM modules, do you just mean reseating them basically? My computer tower also always has the side panel off so I assume it is kept fairly cool...

    Thanks,

    Luke

Yes, that is right. Unchecked. Now the next time you have a BSOD, you will see the error message and be able to provide that to us.

    Great! Thanks Tim :D

Is it worth still following up and doing the virus procedure from MG?

    Thanks,

    Luke

It would be a good idea just to rule that out. Slim chance, but go ahead and do the READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide then start a thread in the malware forum and attach the requested logs so we can rule that out. :)

Just like i said, do that but if you found your PC is clear comeback to this thread and we'll check about a possible 3rd party software or hardware issue.

Hope uren't using some Windows 7 Beta plus Symantec AV.

What antivirus do you have installed? what firewalls or antimalware?

No beta version of Windows 7 no.

I have NOD32 installed as antivirus, malwarebytes paid version, pc tools firewall plus. I also have spywareblaster installed and use spyboy S&D to scan once a week

    Thanks,

    Luke

    Quick update...

Was online using skype for voice and video, along with watching a stream online and blue screen came up :( had my headset on and the sound just froze to a halt and up came the dreaded screen. It hung there however so I grabbed a pic of it with my phone in case it is useful...

Apologies for the picture quality, my blackberry is on its last legs :p

Followed that link and looked at the downloads, one is for driver detective which costs. I have a program at the minute that does that for me, Driver Genius, it updated a few drivers. It didn't however update my graphics card drivers, I checked the nvidia website and noticed there was a update for my card. There was some drivers released 10 days after mine were dated so I grabbed them.

I did download the other program on that site but got a pop up from NOD32, giving me a potential threat, assume that is because it is a registry tool? I did download it but have not installed as of yet, thought I would ask first.

    Cheers,

    Luke

Set a restore point before you run it. I am pretty sure that Nod is flashing on the fact that it is a program that will change the registry. I haven't used it, so I do not know how reliable it will be.

Did you also note that they suggested this may be a malware issue?

Yes I noted this, that is why I posted my logs in the malware section ;) someone is already going through them

    Thanks,

Also that 2nd link on that site is for a program called Regcure, it too is a program you need to buy. Suggested alternative?

    Thanks,

I asked a question in your malware thread. It's the only thing I see that I could question, though I will defer to Kes to finish up with you.

Sorry.....didn't know it would be a pay scam. Have you gone into device manager and checked for any X's or !'s or ?'s?

Yes Tim I checked the device manager and no X's or I's.

Yes that is the software, I linked and responded on the malware thread.

    Thanks,

Does it happen in safe mode? ( You may have to run it in safe mode for a while to check. )

  23. devilishly.charmin

    devilishly.charmin Private First Class

Not sure if it happens in safe mode or not as I don't use my computer in safe mode like I would normally would, using Skype for voice and video, watching streams online and other mundane stuff.

    Thanks,

    Luke

I would try safe mode with networking and see if you crash again. It could be a clue as to what maybe happening in normal mode. As in, you may need to go into the msconfig panel and disable items until you know which is causing it.

Ok I just had another blue screen while on Skype and Yahoo messenger, nothing more.

Same error message. I now would try just using either skype or Yahoo and see which one is the cause.

But that one says win32k.sys, the other never....

Not good, as we could be chasing error messages all day. Do you have your install cd?

  30. devilishly.charmin

    devilishly.charmin Private First Class

I think that error is related to the graphics card. Yes I have my Windows install c.d.

    Thanks,

    Luke

Then I would suggest you try doing a repair install. That should replace any corrupt drivers and system files.

Is that basically putting in the dvd and hitting upgrade button?

    Thanks,

No, you can't do it from withing windows. You need to get into the bios and make the cd-rom device the first boot device. Then boot to the cd.

I think I will just install Windows again from scratch to be honest. I am thinking about building a new computer to be honest. I was going to buy a new graphics card but cannot decide which to buy, advice please?

I currently only have a Nvidia Geforce 9500GT .... not a bad card considering I don't play high specification games but I am going to look at the possibility of using a few games that require a better graphics card. I have looked at a ATI Radeon™ HD 5770 and ATI Radeon™ HD 5830.

I will also need to look at a new motherboard too and looked into this one, Gigabyte GA-H55-UD3H H55 Socket 1156 Motherboard

My sound card should be fine but I am likely to need a new processor too and possibly new RAM.

Processor - AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ - I know that is a AM2 socket and have not fully checked if that new mobo accepts it.

What type of power supply should I be looking at getting too? I only have a 500w atm but was thinking about getting a 900w psu...

Just looking into things at the minute but advice would be great :D

    Thanks,

    Luke
