    Hi

I’m going to be setting up a neighbour’s new computer. He’s asked me to because he knows nothing about them. Personally, I can’t see it need "setting up" but I’ll just show him how to use it.

Because it’s a new computer I suspect it’ll have no recovery disks provided with it and that I’ll have to burn some. I’d like advice on how to do this, for two reasons: 1). I’ve never had to create recovery disks before; and 2). his computer has Windows 7, which I haven’t used before.

    Thanks

There's usually a shortcut in the program menu under the makers name for the recovery disc software - you only get one shot at creating them so make sure you have good discs and enough of them (I usually copy all the related files and folders, i386, Drivers etc. to a secondary location before I start, just in case ... ).

PC-Decrapifier would be a good bet to remove all the trials and already outdated 'extras' that come pre-loaded.

Make sure he shows you the quick setup paper that comes with a computer. It generally also has instructions for creating the recovery DVD and how to access the recovery partition.

    Thanks for that info!

How come you only get one shot at doing it?

Because the software is usually setup to uninstall once the discs are created (anti-piracy measure?).
