being redirected when searching

When ever I do a search in Yahoo or Google, the list comes up. When I click on a site, I get redirected. Most of the time it will try to load "Google-Analytics", but some times it will be "insidelinks", or some other names. If I copy the address, and paste it in the address bar, it will go to the site. Also, a new window will occasionally open by itself. I have run Avast, Spybot, Malwarebytes, Super anti Spyware, Combofix, TDSS killer, and Vundo fix, and I still keep being redirected. I have Windows XP, service pack 3 on my computer. Now that I found this site, I have done everything that I was told to do for cleaning. I think I did it correct? The problem is still happening. I have sent the logs.
    Please help.
    Thanks, Shawn.

Please removed MGtools.exe and ComboFix.exe from the below folder which is not where we specified to save them.
    C:\Documents and Settings\new user\My Documents\MGtools.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\new user\My Documents\ComboFix.exe

Then download and save the current version of ComboFix.exe to your Desktop as requested so that you can follow remaining instructions properly.

Do you know what the below startup is for?
    O4 - Global Startup: Watch.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\C6U14K\WATCH.exe

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {444B911E-6E55-4A11-B3E9-0D3E21AE0437} - http://www.exfol.com/v/1/i/eins008.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

The infection you have is known to infect router hardware. If you have a router hooked up then you need to follow the instructions for your hardware and reset it to factory default settings. Normally there is a recessed push button type switch that needs to be held down for some number of seconds to do this. After resetting to factory defaults on your router, you will need to reconfigure the router for your network if you have made any changes to the default network setup.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thank You for getting back to me. I have done what you asked for, and I still have the problem. I have attached the 2 logs.
I think that the "watch" start up item is for my Bear Paw scanner.

    Thanks, Shawn.

Still being redirected? Then run the newest version of TDSSKiller:

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

I ran TDSS Killer, and no problems were found. I have sent you the log.

    Hmm, open up command prompt

Within the prompt, type: ipconfig /flushdns

    Any change? If not...

It very well could be your router. There is a little button on the bottom ( on most models ) to reset it to factory settings. Do that. You may then need to go back into it to set any special setting that you may have set up originally.

Let us know how you get on.

  9. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Already requested in my fix. If this was not done as requested, it may be the reason for the problem still occurring.

NOTE: Resetting back to factory defaults does not mean power cycle the router! It must be restore to factory settings which is the key to removing the infection from the router.

  10. ShawnD

    ShawnD Private E-2

I did the command prompt, and reset the router. Now, being redirected is only happening about 20% of the time. Also, the other computer that is plugged into the router has not had any problems. Any other ideas?

    Thanks again, Shawn.

    • What browser is being redirected?
    • Have you tried more than browser? If not, please do so.
    • Do you also get redirected when browsing in safe mode? Please test.
    • Have you tried disabling ALL browser addons? If not, please do so.
Since you were very out of date with Malwarebytes definitions, you run a new scan after updating.

Now run Malwarebytes and click the Update tab. Then click the Check for Updates button so you update to the current version of the program and database. Then run a new scan with it too. Make sure you fix the problems found before saving a log. Attach the new log.

I just double checked something your last MGlogs.zip file which implies that you still have a DNS hijack.

    Code:
    =================================================================
    Doing nslookup google.com
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    Server: UnKnown
    Address: 213.109.65.68
    Name: google.com
    Address: 173.194.34.104

nslookup tried to go to 213.109.65.68 which is a known DNS hijacker address in Russia. This means that either:
    1. you did not get ipconfig /flushall to work
    2. your router is infected ( less likely if other PCs have no problem)
    3. or something else is hiding on your PC which has not been found yet.
I would say # 1 is the issue since your log also shows that your DNS servers are set to these Russian addresses
    Code:
            DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 213.109.65.68
                                                213.109.75.214

Please power down your PC for a few minutes. Then boot back up and retest. If still having problems, make sure to test all of what I requested in message # 11.

I will power down now. I did try using Google instead of yahoo, and it appears to work fine. Yahoo is also working fine at the moment. I have not done anything with add ons yet. Also, I tried Internet explorer (no add ons), instead of Firefox, and was redirected every time in both Google and Yahoo.

Until the DNS servers are corrected to be correct for your ISP, you will have this problem. Check what your DNS servers are set to on your other PC where you say you have no problems.

Just in case you still have a problem after the reboot and manually trying to fix your DNS servers, let's search the registry to find all locations where it may be getting set incorrectly.

Now download Registry Search (see the link titled RegSearch Download Link )
    • Extract the files from Regsearch.zip into a folder.
    • Doubleclick regsearch.exe to start the program.
    • See the top 3 boxes under the Enter search strings (case independen) and click Ok... option, enter the below string (use copy and paste)
      • DhcpNameServer
    • Then click "OK".
    • Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file named RegSearch.txt will be saved in the program's folder as well).
    • Attach this RegSearch.txt file.

Still having the problem after restarting. IE is working better than it was, and I'm still occasionally being redirected while using Firefox and Yahoo. How do I check what DNS servers are set to on my other PC?

Thank You for all the time your spending with me, I do appreciate it.
    Shawn.

    You're welcome.
Click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK to open a command prompt.

At the command prompt, enter the below command:

    ipconfig /all

You can do this on both PCs to compare.

However please also do what I requested in message # 15 as RegSearch may help us find additional places where this is set.

Also I want to get a new log just to double check how things are set. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

My other computers DNS servers are 68.87.71.226 & 68.87.73.242. This computers are 213.109.65.68, 213.109.75.214, & 1.1.1.1. Also, here are the 2 logs you want.
    Thanks.

Yes and that is why this one is having problems. ;) Before we try a registry patch, let's see if some command prompt steps can cure this. Open a command prompt window again and enter the below commands each followed by the enter key ( not the spaces after each ipconfig also note the quotes)

    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /registerdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    net stop "dns client"
    net start "dns client"

    ipconfig /all > c:\ipinfo.txt

Now attach the c:\ipinfo.txt log created by the last command.

  20. ShawnD

    ShawnD Private E-2

I typed it a couple of ways and nothing happened. You said not the spaces after ipconfig. Did you mean note the spaces. Do I use the quotes? Is there a space between all and >? And > and c:?
Sorry to be so much trouble, Shawn.

  21. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Sorry yes. You need a space after ipconfig just like you did previously with ipconfig /all

Only the quotes where I put them ;)

The spaces before and after the > sign will not matter but there are spaces the way I typed it.

There is a space after each net, after stop, and after start

  22. ShawnD

    ShawnD Private E-2

Still, nothing seemed to happen after I typed the last entry, but here is the log.
    Hope it helps you, Shawn.

Okay those commands were not able to fix the registry entries. They may be locked. Let's try another method and see what happens.

  24. ShawnD

    ShawnD Private E-2

At the moment it seems to be working in both Firefox and IE. Here are the logs.
    Thanks, Shawn.

You're welcome. Your DNS servers are correct now and your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Okay your last logs showed that it was gone. Run GetLogs.bat again and attach a new MGlogs.zip file so we can see if it came back. Also run the below again.

Your logs show the infection came back. Previously they were clean and now they are not. This very likely still points to your router and we need to be absolutely sure.

As a test, you need to plug this PC directly into your cable or DSL modem (whatever is the first piece of equipment coming into your house) and totally bypass the router. Then power cycle your cable or DSL modem. Once it is back up, power cycle your PC. Then rerun the steps in message # 23. Then get the same logs to attach as in message # 27 and see how things are working.

  30. ShawnD

    ShawnD Private E-2

I tried to bypass the router (as you directed) a few times. Each time (after plugging my computer directly into the box provided by Comcast), I was unable to go online. I had to call my cable/internet provider to take the box off of stand by. They said I can do it myself, by hitting the stand by button, but that didn't work. But, I do have new information. Aside from the family computer (not affected), and my desktop that is having this trouble, I own a laptop. I hardly ever use it, but early Sat. morning, after our last contact, I got it out off it's case. I put the battery in it, and turned it on. This laptop is now affected. It has a wireless card, and uses the router. The family computer has different anti virus programs. My 2 computers have the same. Does this mean the problem is the router? And if yes, what is my next step?

Thank You very much again, Shawn.

  31. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Yes it most likely means it is your router. If you are 100% sure that you really set it back to factory defaults and did not just do a simple reset or power cycle, then I suggest that you see if a new firmware load exists for your router or if you can just reflash even the existing version and then see what happens.
