Got something on my computer under the guise of Microsoft Security Essentials Alert. It allows me to get to my home page but it also opens up other pages. It won't let me download files, allow popups and I cannot change internet options. Also, when in IE, the webpage does not show at the top of the page or even in the taskbar at bottom.

I performed all the steps in "READ & RUN ME FIRST".
I had downloaded AVG 9 (free version) now I cannot uninstall and not sure if running or now when I performed the steps.

SUPERAntiSpyware - seemed to run fine
Malwarebytes - seemed to run fine.
Combfix - got the blue screen in the middle and had to reboot - did not continue with Combofix and there is no log.
RootRepeal - ran overnight and windows locked up so had to reboot in morning and rerun
MGtools - seemed to run fine

After all that - no change in gaining control of IE or Internet options.
Since I cannot change popup blocker I will have to save logs onto CD and include in next post as I cannot attach files from this computer.

Here are my log attachments. Couldn't find original MGlog and ended up running it again.

Yes, and you also have McAfee SecurityCenter installed! Bad idea to have more than one antivirus running! Try using Your Uninstaller to get rid of AVG:

Do so many users REALLY need admin priviledges??

Viewpoint Media Player <--- Uninstall this.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O2 - BHO: 931928 helper - {5F6D7A37-A3D1-47F1-920D-3F48370D509B} - (no file)
    • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [e©ùýùÆûïþóÎéøøÈøôãÊýòñûÊÞó] C:\Program Files\XP Antivirus\xpa.exe
    • O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    • O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
    • O9 - Extra button: The Weather Channel - {2E5E800E-6AC0-411E-940A-369530A35E43} - (no file)
    • O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: The Weather Channel - {2E5E800E-6AC0-411E-940A-369530A35E43} - (no file)
    • O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    • O16 - DPF: {E06E2E99-0AA1-11D4-ABA6-0060082AA75C} -
    • O21 - SSODL: SysRunOnce - {66da759b-4cef-4a77-95e0-bafae5c606c0} - (no file)
    • O21 - SSODL: SetupAvp - {c9ce7a9b-b474-4a8c-a987-0108506bb9f9} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know how things are running. :)

Good. Just continue on nicely, no need to keep posting your updated status as it is classed as bumping and puts your thread further back in the queue. Simply get through those steps and THEN make your response. :)

    o.k. ran everything.

I could not copy/paste into Avenger so I typed it in myself. When I rebooted and the Avenger log file indicated that it could not find the folder XP AntiVirus.

When I access internet - I was getting the same problem and I could not attach files in my first draft of this post. I had to save to a disk first than attach from a different computer.

I've attached the Avenger log file as well.

After I ran fixME.reg - I did get a message that said the fixME.reg has been successfully entered into the registry.

Let me know what's next after you look at the attachments.

    Continued Thanks with your help.

Okay I want you to rename combofix.exe to 123.com, try to run it in normal mode now that we have made some progress, and if not in normal mode I want you to reboot into safe mode to try.

    Attach the log if successful.

Hello, finally was able to get back to the problem at hand.

Could not run ComboFix (123.com) in normal mode. Ran in safe mode and the attached log was created.

Glad that we are still making forward progress!

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!

Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.

    • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
    • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
    • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
    • Click the Start Scan button.
    • Do not use the computer during the scan
    • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
    • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_14.17.05_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory ( usually Local Disk C ).
    • Attach this log to your next message

Okay did you reboot afterwards? If not please do so.

How are things working since this removed the source of your redirection?

Also, please run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Hi,

TDDSKiller did force a reboot - which it did and I also shut down for the night.

So my homepage comes up with no other windows - so I think the redirect has been resolved. However, I still cannot access Internet Options - no tool bar and the webpage info only shows up in address bar (no bottom task bar or tab info). Also I still cannot attach files from that computer. Needed to save log onto CD and attach and respond from different computer.

Not sure exactly what you mean. Have you just tried unlocking toolbars and reenabling the Menu, Favorites, Commands and Status bars?

Why? Exactly what happens when you try to?

Download and install Mozilla FireFox and use it at least until you work out the issue with IE. See if you can attach logs with FireFox.

Regarding internet options - I cannot rightclick on tool bar area to unlock and reset. Also if I go into control panel - there is no longer an icon for Internet Options - so don't know any other way to unlock and reenable all those items.

Regarding attaching files. From this site - when I click on management attachments - it does not provide the button "BROWSE". Just a small button with no text and when I click - nothing seems to happen.

You don't right click. You just click on the Tools menu item that is on the Command toobare and then select Toolbars. As in the below image. Double click to expand:

    IE-TB1_2.jpg

The other method is from the top menu as shown below and click the View, Toolbars

    IE_View.jpg

    Have you tried FireFox yet

Thanks for trying to help - but I don't have those two options.

tools menu option not there. I have a Home button, a Outlook button, a print button and some dropdown arrows that don't do anything.

I also don't have the bar that lists File/Edit/View/Favorites/Tools/Help.

And I can't see to find a way to get them.

You have had a lot of malware removed and it may have affected IE. I suggest that you uninstall Internet Explorer and then after running CCleaner, re-download IE8 and see if you are still missing your normal toolbars.

    Thank you.

I have uninstalled SP3 and IE 7. Then reloaded and everything seems to be back in order.

Thank you to all who helped. I really appreciate the work that you all did.

    Thanks again.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Support MajorGeeks with Geek Wear!

  22. scosr

    scosr Private E-2

    Finished all instructions.

One note - during the process I had to change Combofix to 123.com. So at first, following exact instructions, it could not find combofix - but it did work when I changed to 123.com.

Again, Thank you to all that have helped!!!!
