Hi, I recently formatted my computer after having issues with it before, some will see from my previous threads. Anyway I have gone to Windows 7 64bit.

I have always thought what is the perfect security set up as well as sensible surfing. I have gone with,

Any other recommendations or possible problems with what I have gone with?

    Thanks,

    Luke

    Hi Luke

Yes that seems great, all you need to do is to keep Windows upto date using Windows Update and keep your security apps fully upto date and safe surf and you will be fine,.

I would add Spywareblaster to that as it doesnt run but adds known bad sites etc to the exceptions list of IE and Fx and just needs manually updating once a week. This adds a good level of pre-emptive security to your PC,

But on the whole I think you have the security nailed, so good stuff.

Thanks for the response and advice, David.

However, most of the time I use Google Chrome, is it worth me still installing Spywareblaster for the limited times I will use IE?

    Thanks,

    Luke

    Hi

Yes I would still install Spywareblaster even if using Chrome as a Browser, in part I'm not sold on Chromes security yet!

Spywareblaster just gives you a free extra level of security that is not worth missing out on IMHO.

But definatly think you have the topic of PC security in hand with what you have posted already, its a welcome sight to see someone take this so seriously, so good stuff.

Ok I will install Spywareblaster too. What don't you like about Chrome's security? Also do you advise using IE or Firefox or any other?

    Thanks,

    Luke

    Hi

Personal choice and born out of a few issues with Chome, personally dont think its bad but its not great either. I personally just wouldnt use it to do online banking but not one issue but a combination of, I prefer IE8, Fx or Minefield to do my banking via.

Chrome if it works for us is well worth using, I prefer IE8/9 (IE9 beta is very good) or Minefield which is a beta of what will be Firefox 4.

But never change anything if what is working for you actually works, there is no right or wrongs in the tech area.

Oh, I figured the newer version of Chrome was safe with online banking, I now see it uses a 128-bit encryption when logging onto my banks website. Along with that and the Trusteer application I have installed I feel fairly safe :p

I did see IE 9 BETA when reading Webuser magazine and was impressed with what I saw.

    Thanks,

    Luke

I have Spywareblaster installed but I am a loyal Opera user and sadly Spywareblaster does not cover Opera.

Is there anything that does something similar for Opera?

I have also been using MVPS HOSTS file

SpyBot-Search & Destroy has a similar immunization feature to that of SpywareBlaster that works for Opera along with I.E. and Firefox. Update every Wednesday and then run the immunize option. Doesn't conflict with SpywareBlaster(anymore). I wouldn't use the "Teatimer" feature though.

Luke, it's worth considering changing the DNS server (on your PC or router) to OpenDNS and using some of their site-blocking.

Just one suggestion here. I recently installed the free Avast! Av and set it for auto-update. It seemed to have some problems with that and I wasn't ware of it. Just yesterday I got an update notification that a newer version was available so I downloaded last night. The newer version 5.0.677 updates properly, with the pop-up & verbal updates notification.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

One more basic (but often overlooked) security measure: surf as a restricted user, not as an administrator.

Thanks to all who have left comments. Sat, I am going to go with opendns, I did use this before but never got back round to using it again so will try it back out.

I have seen this before but never got round to trying it so will look into this.

    Thanks,

    Luke

You should look at the comments on the MVPS HOSTS page about (possibly) changing the DNS Client service to Manual.
I have done this and I'm not aware of any ill affects, although I'm not sure if either of the pro and con arguments are valid.

    FYI, I'm also using OpenDNS.
Currently, I'm not using any of the blocking features.

As for the comments about Avast
It seems to me that this latest version works more smoothly than the previous ver.
My machine boots more quickly and Automatic updates do work fine.

My DNS client service has been disabled for months with no noticeable ill-effects so far, probably not advisable on a portable machine though.
