Hi, just wondering if I attach this minidump file to my thread would someone be able to read over it and see why I came back to my computer rebooting from a apparent blue screen. I was not at the computer when it occurred so did not see anything. Team Viewer, Skype and Yahoo messenger were the active applications on the computer while I was afk

    Thanks,

    Luke

1x nVidia and 2x Directx files implicated there. I'd check that all related drivers are updated and, as you were absent from the PC when this happened, check your Sleep/Power-saving settings too.

Hey mate, thank you for looking through the file for me. I double checked my sleep settings and as expected they are all set to never. I have the latest nVidia drivers for my card too. Not really too sure what else to check up on ....

    Thanks,

    Luke

Checkout this section on the 0x116 error, it may give some ideas.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

And, is the machine performing well now? Any more blue screens?

Yeah the comp is performing fine apart from that 1 blue screen, if I get more I will post the dumps to see if it is a repeating error. I updated direct X in case that is required. I use driver genius to make sure my drivers are updated and my current nVidia driver shows in the attached screenshot

    Thanks,

    Luke

FYI, here's a list of the drivers loaded during the last crash, dates are mostly visible, listed oldest first.

I wouldn't rely on any 3rd party software to check drivers, manual is best.

Not actually too sure what to make of that list lol. Manually can take a long time that is why I figured I would use some 3rd party program.

Here is another dump file for the a recent blue screen while running skype and watching online stream

Same fault and files involved as the last dmp, Luke.

At this point I'd suggest rolling back the nVidia drivers to an earlier version - might even consider switching to onboard graphics for troubleshooting purposes.

And, the standard caveat: is onboard video disabled while running the PCI card?

Thank you for reading through the logs again, Sat.

Any suggestions to which ones specifically? My on board video is disabled, as far as I am aware :confused I had a check in the BIOS and couldn't see a section about disabling on board graphics though, just disabled the on board sound and something for my LAN I don't need. Motherboard is just a basic one, Asus m2v K8T890 socket AM2

    Thanks,

    Luke

I'd take a look at nVidia's site and grab some earlier WHQL certified drivers, Luke.

No, looks like no onboard graphics on that 'board.

Did you work through the section on 0x116 errors I linked to earlier? The more detail we have on what you've tried (and any resulting errors/logs) the better :)

You could also try uninstalling all software you won't need for the next week or so and check for updates on all that you do use regularly. But test with older drivers first, if it BSOD's, post the dmp and move on to another step.

Ok, I have looked through the archived drivers on the nVidia site and gone with..

    GeForce/ION Release 197 WHQL 197.13 25.3.2010

I tried updating all my drivers, only other thing I see on there is about hooking up a mains fan and blowing it directly into my computer? I always have my side panel off as it so I figured it would be fairly cool, if not cool enough for nothing to overheat..

    Thanks,

    Luke

Ok, now keep pushing for a BSOD, while you're waiting, take a look at this page (and slowly dig through the search pages at the bottom and the continuing pages).

Read quite a few people mentioned about making sure the BIOS is updated... had a quick look on the asus site and saw this description on one of the updates.

"Fix system unstable when GeForce 8 series VGA card installed."

Mine is a 9 series card so :confused

Either way is it worth updating the BIOS, if so I have never done this before so would need some guidance but I am willing to try it.

    Thanks,

    Luke

EDIT - Mines actually a PCI not a VGA, so I guess that rules that arguments out? lol. Still possibly worth it though?

The details on how to update the BIOS will be linked from the ASUS page, if you're lucky, it'll be done from within Windows - do it within a few minutes of a bootup and do nothing else until it's finished - except keep your fingers and toes crossed ;)

Go for the latest BIOS update, it sounds like it may well be a fix, study the instructions closely, good luck and shout if you get stuck.

Actually, I'd be very surprised if your card was a PCI - it'll be PCI-E methinks ;) VGA is just the generic term for a graphics card, PCI, AGP, PCI-E etc. are specific bus types that are not interchangeable.

Hey, been on the Asus website and see no clear instructions on how it is done, probably just me missing out on something to be brutally honest. With me not being totally sure on how this is done I am a little hesitant in just diving straight in without caution. I just went here and searched M2V and found my board but then became a little baffled as to where I go from there. Apologies if I am needing everything done for me and a lot of advice and guidance but it is best to be sure of something before doing it. I am on Windows 7 64 bit too, I figure some of the things I need will have to be compatible with the OS in order to run, the upgrade utility if it can be done within Windows.

CORRECT! Total blonde moment for myself lol

    Thanks,

    Luke

The BIOS walkthrough for Windows is here (it's linked from the left side of the page below).

Use the Version V7.06.02 BIOS updater for 64-bit Windows, it's under BIOS utilities on the download page for the M2V. And grab the 2101 version of the BIOS.

Downloaded the files you said, however that guide looks like you will need a A drive to make a boot disk? I don't have one on this computer. :( Unless you can do them using a CD?

Hey quick question before I go ahead and update that BIOS, tomorrow. Busy day at work so will get onto it tomorrow.

Today I had a old problem with my internet. Basically it was just turned itself off. The system tray icon went yellow and the only way to get it back on was to reset my router, not what I want to have to do to be honest lol. Note, the wireless was still working on home laptop at this point. Anyway this use to happen before and just happened the one time earlier. I THINK it has something to do with my network card or the driver, I am sure I updated it which cause this, or didn't update it lol, either way it is a bit of a issue. I have attatched a screenshot with the name of it, it is also a onboard one. Which leads me to my next question, would it be worth buying a new one? If so which one? I saw a cheap one on ebay I thought MIGHT be worth looking at but I am not clued up on stuff like this so thought I would ask in case you are.... <-- assuming you are :p This here

Anyway is there any of the settings I could possibly change on the current card/driver to help prevent this?

    Thanks,

    Luke

If your nic card is dying, you could always get a USB Wifi dongle. Most are around $40.

Therefore my desktop would be using wireless connection? If so I don't want that :( If you meant something completely different sorry.

    Thanks,

    Luke

I am sorry, I take it you want to stay on a wired connection? Which would mean installing a new PCI nic card.

Yes sir, correct. Advise on a suitable card? Unless my card can be altered to not do whatever its doing lol...

You could try running it under Compatibility Mode or take a look in their support site or forum to see how others do it now that so few PC's come with floppy drives.

Tried in compatibility mode and it didn't work. Think I will just leave it now and move on. Would you be able to give me some advice on new computer parts for new build?

    Thanks,

Hi, after installing a new video card, ATI Radeon HD 5700 I have got 1 blue screen. I was hoping you guys, 1 man in particular to look over the dump file and possibly give me some advice on how I go about reading them myself for future reference. I tried debugging tools for windows and getting the symbols pack but it said something about not having the correct symbols or something so I couldn't quite get all the error. I will attach it and appreciate whomever reads it for me.

    Thanks,

    Luke

    Hiya Luke,

This BSOD looks like it's quite a straightforward one (that's uncommon); WinDeBg and BlueScreenView both point at the \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\usbvideo.sys as being the culprit. I guess this is your webcam software, check it's the correct driver and that it's the latest version for 64-bit. Or buy a compatible webcam.

If that doesn't give you a fix, look at updating your ASACPI.sys file, it's very old. See corronna.org, this site is a very good depository of BSOD info, if your serious about learning about troubleshooting BSOD's, start here.

Any security (HIPS, firewall, etc.) software could also have affected or triggered this BSOD, as could other old drivers.

The first step towards a stable PC is running minimal 3rd party software (that means eg. uninstalling all ATI software except the latest drivers - no CCC or other bloat) and ensuring that all drivers are the latest available.

Hi Sat, thank you again for the reply, can't say how much I appreciate it. First off, would you possibly be able to tell me how I go about reading the dump files so I do not always have to come and ask others (makes you feel inadequate lol, to some extent :p) I have a go using WinDeBg but something about the symbols gave me a error.

Updating the ASACPI.sys file ..... not too sure what I am looking for on the drivers page so if I am just being slow I apologise. I had a quick glance at that page you linked me to and saved it in my bookmarks :) thank you for that.

What do you suggest about updating drivers, use another program to see if they're all up to date or manually do it, if so which drivers to you prioritise to update first? I will remove all the ATI software the CD installed. I have installed the software for my sound card because if I don't I cannot get the 5.1 settings to work on them. Apart form sound and graphics 3rd party apps to be removed what else do you suggest removing?

Also as a side note, don't suppose you read over my other post from the other day about my windows 7 theme changing to the basic one, if so do you think it could be linked to this in some way or totally different?

    Thanks again,

    Luke

Ok Luke, from the Carronna.org link (where you'll find all the info needed to read the dump files)
The download for the latest version for your 'board is here, look under Utilities, it's the top entry.

When updating drivers because of BSOD's use BlueScreenView to list the loaded drivers by date and work your way through them manually from the oldest, driver updater programs are not likely to cover all the drivers. Use a search engine and carrona.org to track down the latest versions.

Themes are a waste of resources ^^ I don't do them, is that issue solved now?
