Help! lost dvd files on disk

    Hi
I installed EasyDVD Clone from the links here, to copy a DVD to DVD (birthday party today)
Installed the Source DVD and I saw the pictures/video appear in Windows Media player as the program worked. Got to 100% and was getting ready to insert a blank DVD into the drive, when the program indicated that the files on disk were being erased for formatting?! Then my system crashed.

Now I cannot locate the video pictures anywhere. The original disk has been wiped and there is no evidence of a birthday party on the disk.

Looking for the video that must have been copied somewhere so that I can retrieve them :(
Anyone have any advice on how to get them off the harddrive?

The link to the 'getting started'page for this program is here http://www.homedvdcopy.com/easydvdclone/help1/index.html?gettingstartedguide.htm. Point to look at is 3. - • Select the Temp path on your hard drive for storing the temporary DVD files. Is there a chance the copied files are here?
As this program is listed here for download, I wouldn't expect this to be seen as spamming :)

    Greetings, Grumbles.

Have you tried a System Restore? You may be able to see your original data if it hasn't been overwritten. There are also some good free restoration programs that may help.

As far as the 'Temp' location, you might try going into folder options, unhide hidden files and folders and system files, see if that helps with the search. If you can't remember the path, you could try starting the program again, simulate another burn - as long as you haven't changed anything, the path should be similar. (Hint: if you get this thing working, next time create a dedicated folder for storing the temporary files).

    What kind of 'crash'?

Will try system restore as a last resort, but will unhide files and see what is there.
System rebooted when I stopped the files erasing - i panicked when i saw this! Found the path and two files VIDEO_TS but don't see the video

There is a possibility that within your My Documents folder, Easy DVD may have created a temp folder. Try having a look around.
You may or may not find anything but it is worth a shot.

sorry Caliban, my advice was the same as yours re temp folders. I had only skimmed your reply until now. Best of luck, G. :)

    No problem, Kestrel.

Grumbles, if you can find a VIDEO_TS folder, is there data contained in the folder? You might be able to load the .VOB (if there is one) with something like VLC - if there are multiple files in the folder, try loading the whole thing as a project within EasyDVD. If that doesn't work, try another program, such as ImgBurn.

Hi Caliban, yes I have located 2 VIDEO_TS folders, but they only contain 14kb in each!

Not sure how to proceed from here.

    Thanks

    (and thanks Kes too)

Was the original source disk a re-writable? This is a strange turn of events. I guess your machine is fine now?

    Yes the disk was -RW

The video clips must be somewhere as I saw them displayed in WMP on screen as the copying from source was going through the motions.
They would i presume go into a temp file, but where I do not know.

I read somewhere that on a DVD -/+ RW disc, that even though they are erased, the info is still there and may be recoverable with one of these specialised recovery firms, which I will try.

Maybe worth taking this PC to an expert technician and seeing if they can find the files? What do you think?

Yes, only the file locations in the index are erased unless you add more files thereby overwriting what's currently still there.

Try Recuva, it's a nice and easy tool to use. Just put your media in the drive and answer the questions as best you can.

Yes, the RW disk, Recuva will not delete anything further.

Tried Recuva (excellent program and easy) with no luck. Would not let me browse the E:/ drive as this is where the 'blank' disk is housed. Windows kept coming up with 'do you want to format' command!
Tried the scan for all drives, nothing found, however the option for a deep scan came up, but this is a lengthy process, therefore will try later tonight :)

Cannot get deep scan done as other PC problems interupting process - see other thread re something up :(
    New PC needed LOL :p

Recuva Deep scan done on C (computer) and D (factory image) drives and no sign of deleted files, which makes me wonder now that the DVD film is still in the TEMP folders.
    How do I access these.

Thanks for sticking with me on this, if it wasnt someone's 5th birthday party, and all the locals now camped outside my house waiting to offer my body to medical research, I wouldn't be bothered!

Did you unhide all files and folders? Call up a folder, then organize(W7), folder and options, view, show hidden files and folders also untick hide operating system files. That's all I got G, maybe try another recovery program if Recuva still doesn't find it. Plus, this thread is getting old, maybe start a new one if this doesn't work out..:)

I have finally given up and put it down to experience! In future, I will buy the software needed instead of relying on freebies.

Thanks to all that contributed :)
