I can't see anything like that ever being passed into law.

I'm shocked that MS would be saying anything like that should be done. That would be a sure way for Apple to gain huge ground in OS share.

Interesting article BOOM! But impossible to say the least, as you know:)
Legit and patched OS or other wise.
    What gibberish, throttled :-D

What-they calling for the death knell :-D

Who is going to issue the "health certificate" not MS surely.

Chas,Tim, Kes and dr.m are my new best friends :p

    Cheers..

I actually think its a good idea and in corporate useage a similar idea is used in Network Access Protection.

Personally I agree I do not know how this would be implimented fully at all, but its a fair idea, in that segregate the infected PC from the WWW until its clean of malware, it would save many from them being infected via botnets etc

But I know that Chas and myself do feel as if Windows needs to change into not allowing any 3rd party applications from accessing System32 etc and they should install every component into their own Program Files folder (dlls, registry entries etc) and that we should also not have hidden files at all.

I heard about this and wonder how they would do this. They are specifically wanting to target computers that have a bot running in secret that the user is totally unaware of. Wonder if this would result in a person getting on their computer and just not being able to access the web. No warning or info as to what is happening. Scary.

TBH Scott Charney's comments from Microsoft have as usual been twisted and modled into something they are not, he is not advocating this is going to happen but more that is this a posibility for us to use to stem the malware plague.

Need to read his blog post HERE on this, as I do not think MSFT have the capability to deal with this, would IMHO need OS developers and ISPs to join in any effort to stem malware.

But the press and ill informed as usual latch onto the extreme without knowing what the F they are talking about.

Do we wish to curb malware,... yes/no? I guess the answer is yes and ideas like this are not perfect but do at least address the issue directly, may not be ooooohh what you'd like to hear but in th main its a logial approach, personally I;d like to ban all users of illegal OS or apps from the net..... and that wouldnt go down well as many will be using hooky OS/apps, not my issue but I dont wish to be carrying the can for those using hooky OSes, they bring this on themselves and rhe legit users should not be subjected it penalties, and with many malwares getting in via illgeal OS versions and downloads its nto suprising that MSFT are thinking in this way.

The unsuspecting as TimW puts it are a sad causalty and well the malware forum is full of them anyways, if some mechanism is put into place to remove the PC from the net, then possible to then using another PC that is ok for users to remove malware from their PC.

In a perfect world, is it not the case that our Antivirus/Malware applictions would remove ALL[/Bl of these malware leading to us not needing ideas like Scott's??? so are Antivirus/Malware apps useless?

Me I think not, but they go some way to protecting us but not 100% of the way, the user is the last part and through lack of education on securing a PC or the fact that many like free music, apps, movies etc that we have this major issue in malware now.

HORRIBLY, Horrible idea and here's why.

You're effectively revoking the rights of the people to partake of a service they pay for, namely, connection to the internet via their service provider (amongst others). This is a piss poor attempt for microsoft to shuffle the responsibility, specifically, THEIR responsibility, off to the user. Why do viruses infect these systems? partly user error, and partly insecure operating systems.

You can't put a lot of the blame, regardless of "stupid user" syndrome, onto the masses. Not everyone can focus on, has the ability or time to focus on computer security. They leave that up the people that write the software or install their systems because they have no other authority to do so themselves, other than geeks and anti-virus software etc.

If you try and argue the point otherwise, then I blame you for my point being incorrect. See how that works?

See your point Kodo and agree. It's like someone whose brakes fail on their car and the manufacturer saying you shouldn't push them that hard.

MS needs to tighten up their operating system where system files can not be overwritten by malware. This is saying that their OS has a big hole in it but it is the responsibility of the consumer to deal with it and be punished if they don't. Bad business all around.

Windows has detected malware on your computer!

Rather than block it in the first place or automatically clean the malware windows has decided to cut your internet off.

Good luck Googling a solution :-D

    :-D

I was amazed at this, and knew it should prove for some interesting comments.

I agree as I said with the comments mentioned and MSFT are not going this route afaik, this is just an opinion of the Trusted Computing VP.

Did anyone read his blog that I linked too, truthfully over the press soundbites?

    Soundbite above from the blog.

I also as I said belive that Windows itself should be more secure and outlined the steps I would like to see, in that NO 3rd party app can install anything into Windows System/System32/Wow64 etc all their components should be in their own Program Files folder, this would make it easier to remove an app as well as trace malware I believe.

I would have to party disagree in that the majority of malware these days is due to users wanting free music, movies and apps, this coming off P2P is malware ridden, can see it in the logs they produce that Limewire, Azurus etc are listed as apps.... 2+2 = malware route.

Its also not all Microsoft and Windows OS fault, its a big part of this but 3rd party apps such as Adobe Flash, Acrobat, Apple Quicktime, Mozilla Firefox are all routes for malware infection.

Its a BIG issue we have as computer users that not one fix will do, the one Scott mentions is a radical one and will it work, well in reality no it wont, as we all know that most malware is also spread by users using illegal versions of Windows, should Microsoft start actively and radically blocking all those illegal keys, YES, but then thats seen as drastic by some too.

Legal users of Windows are or could be penalised by illegal users just as TimW's analogy in car drivers Legally Insured drivers are penalised with higher premiums due to Uninsured drivers.
