I am having problems backing up my computer (system image) using Windows 7 from my HP Pavillion DV6 series and it keeps failing. The message I get is incorrect function 080070001, backup failed. I have always used the Windows backup function on previous computers but this new one has got me really stumped. Any suggestions please
    Thanks

I'm guessing that the auto-installed WD software might be causing this problem. Does it accept a backup image from another PC?

Thanks for the reply but your suggestion may be one I haven't thought of, however I cannot remember any software (CDs or other) to install the external drive, I just plugged it in and it worked. I did format the drive but would this be available on the Internet?

    Thanks

Many external drives have their own built-in software that auto-installs on the first connection to a PC, sometimes enforcing encryption of any data written to the drive and adding virtual CD drives, etc. This behaviour can upset a lot of other programs.

You say you've formatted it? I'm not sure this always works as intended because Windows can only 'see' what any software allows it to (you may be formatting a virtual drive - a folder within the ext. drive). If you can attach a screenshot of your Disk Manager showing the layout of your drives, it might help us.

Your Windows System logs could be useful too, both can be accessed via right-clicking (My) Computer and selecting 'Manage'.

Attached is a copy of my disk setup. Hope I got the right page. I cannot find the other one Window System logs. Can you direct me please, I use Windows 7.
    Thanks

We need the view of your disks as seen by Windows Disk Management; Right-click Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management, attach it like mine so we get maximum details please.

We'll also need to find the Backup logs, are they in C:/Windows/Logs/Backup? Are there files there (*.etl) that you could zip and attach? Sorry, I don't use Windows Backup so I can't check file/folder names my end.

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner - was away from computer all day Sunday.
Attached is a copy as per your image (I hope) on the Disk Manager.

Re the Windows Backup files, there are 4 * 10MB etl files, which I do not know how to zip and a backup text file (attached)

Hope this info will help you further with my problem.

    Thanks

No worries about keeping me waiting, always plenty to do :)

Your disk partitioning looks normal :)

However, the Backup error log might hold some bad news:-
We may be looking at some kind of malware, a trojan perhaps :(.

Do you know your way to the Malware forum yet?

Thanks for the ETL's, I'll look at them next.

Hmm, put a hold on the Malware forum for a while.

What antivirus program do you have on the HP?

thanks again for looking at my problem. Hope its not a trojan, but will check out malware. I have used malawarebytes before which I understand is good software.

Look forward to hearing about you about the eft files.

    Thanks

I couldn't make any sense of the ETL/EFT/whatever files, sorry, loaded them up and nothing usable, guess I'll need to spend some research time on troubleshooting those :(

MalwareBytes is fine but you don't have a resident antivirus scanner - Norton, AVG, Trend, McAfee, ... ?

I'm hoping that you do have an antivirus installed that's "wrongly" blocking access to that file, it may be innocent :).

Gee thanks that was a quick reply! I do use an antivirus - microsoft security essentials - which I run every day, and it found something which suddenly appeared yesterday early morning, and I also run Advanced System Care (freebie version) and Lavasoft Adaware (free version) on a regular basis. Don't like Nortons, and I have had a problem with AVG although I do like it.

If MSE found something recently, it's definitely time to visit the Malware forum.

It's best not to risk trying anything more until you've been given the all clear.

Hi Satrow - Thank you again for your reply. I do realise I have caused you a lot of extra work but when you mentioned that I could have a trojan and need to run a program such as malawarebytes I got a little concerned and decided to kill all nasties and format/recover to factory settings which I am doing now. A spring clean can work wonders as I have found out in the past, so many thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.
I haven't got as far as setting up the external drive yet, but will let you know how I get on.
    Again - thank you
    Tilly

No problem, Tilly, the nuke and rebuild option is safest, I hope you get it back up and running fast :)

Try signing in to the WD forum for support. Also email WD. This is a common problem as some of the WD external drives have a partiton you cannot remove which is for their SmartWare . Avoid the SmartWare and just use the usb drive for storage or imaging.
Concurrently, follow directions to update your firmware, disable the VCD then use an imaging program not a backup program.
