AVG Free 9 is telling me to upgrade to AVG 11. AVG 9 is truly free. If I upgrade to the "free" version of AVG 11 (antivirus only) am I upgrading to a trial version that will expire in 30 days unless I pay?

    Thanks.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

AFAIK, AVG is still free. You might consider running the AVG Remover to uninstall your present version, then installing the newest version.

It looks like you get a 30 day trial version if you do a new install. I think I'll try the upgrade first (rather than removing AVG 9) to see what happens (but will wait a couple of weeks to give version 11 time to settle).

Completely free AVG 2011 here. :)

I upgraded the free AVG 9 to AVG 2011 - it's still the free version, no trial.

I was away for a couple of weeks and when I returned AVG wanted me to upgrade to 2011. I did this but system seems unstable now - inconsistent boot up and the AVG won t update - keeps giving "General Error" message and antivirus is not running. I have used AVG for many years but not sure about 2011. Anyone got any comments please?

threadbare, I recommend using the AVG Remover that Caliban suggested then installing a fresh copy of AVG 11 Free. Mimsy provided the link. :)

Hi Ichase, Thanks for your reply. I went to AVG forum and its easy to see they are having some issues with 2011, boot up, updating and slowing down system. However the suggestion was to do a custom install of 2011 with the identity protection disabled. I have done this and seems to work well. But I will try your idea to achieve a full and proper installation. Thanks again

Hi everyone, this is Keoni Chavez, Junior Community Manager at AVG. Yes, it's true: we do have a free version of AVG 2011, and if you have an existing copy of AVG 9 installed, the update will still be free.

In regard to the slowdown issue some users are experiencing, our tech team knows about it and are working on it. In the meantime, users have had success with the following workaround:

    •Open AVG User Interface
    •Double-click on the Resident Shield
•Un-tick the option "Resident Shield active"
    •Save the changes

Give this a try, reboot your machine, and see if it helps. Thanks, guys!

    Best,
    Keoni

Hi all well thanks I have now used the recommended uninstall for AVG, reinstalled it and all is now working well with normal installation. Still slow, but I will try the fix below. I m pleased to have sorted the problem coz have used AVG for many years with good reults!

Hi threadbare:wave I was wondering the same thing, thinking of going from AVG 9 Free to AVG 11 Free, but only found one tool for removal, "avg2011remover"... My main concern, is I think it best to remove my AVG 9 before installing AVG 11, but will this tool do it? Or, is it only for AVG 11?

Yes, I went to the forum too, and the downloads, and that is the only tool I can find. I am in the process of downloading AVG 11 Free version, but it will take a LONG time on my DUN LOL 135 MB is a lot to ask of my DUN, for sure. I haven't received any update to update from 9 to 11 as of yet, but just thought a fresh install would be best. Plus, I have to put it on my neighbor's Vista, so I just might burn it to a CD for that. So far, I am on two days of downloading! Yeah, am I having fun yet? Yup!

I just got the update from AVG. Oddly enough, there was two choices..
One, AVG Anti-Virus Free 2011 Free , but showing as a TRIAL version? The second one, AVG Internet Security 2011 Paid version

I clicked on the FREE Version, AVG Anti-Virus Free 2011, so I am assuming this is what you did too, pwillener? It says, TRIAL version, so is kinda confusing. I know there is a free dl of the full file, but it is 135MB :cryHUGE. Wayyyyyy to big for my DUN... This update is 4190 KB. Any insight?

Hi Tee Cee Yes it is quite a large file. I Can't really say anything about that. Maybe AVG is increasing the scope of the product to cope with increasingly complex threats, maybe its moving up a gear, but I would say go with it if you have had good results with AVG in the past - why change? But maybe Keoni Chavez can tell us a bit more - why has AVG changed so much with this issue? We are already promised that they are working to improve it and - hey - its still AVG free!

Hi threadbare:wave The update to the AVG 9 was only 4190KB. I haven't installed it YET, hoping to get some more insight first. The 135MB one was the entire AVG 11. I do hope Keoni Chavez does come back with some more details, because for me to dl a 135MB on a DUN, well, there just isn't enough time for that:confused I have had great results with AVG, and it works so much like my Trend Micro, I really would like to know, if the 4190 KB is only an installer, and what to expect when I click onto that to install, or is it best to remove the AVG 9 and then go with the AVG 11? Yes, the free version has done me very well. I haven't had any issues with it. :)

TeeCee, this might make interesting reading for you and other DUN users. There's an interesting article on AVG 2011 and resource usage, the part that seems most relevant for DUN users is the pre-download customisation option, not sure if you can use a download manager for the resulting download though.
Maybe there's more details somewhere about download size from someone who's tried this method?

Thanks, satrow, that was quite interesting, as I already did try the Custom options, and got it down to just what I needed, and it was still 111.1MB, and downloading on a DUN, well, forget it. I did, however, manage to burn it to a CD this morning, at the library on their hi-speed computer, but I think the "136 MB" file size, was just HUGE... I haven' t installed it yet, not really sure if I will now. I am using XP Pro, SP3, and I have heard a lot of people are having "issues" with it on XP, with false positives. I have had real good luck with my AVG 9, so I think I will just stick with that for now. I wonder if they will ever get the bugs out of this new one? Or, do they think everyone is going to buy their AV? I think the latter, myself.

Thank you for your input. Much appreciated.

TeeCee, if you really want AVG 11 and it's impossible for you to download it, I have a very nice fast broadband connection, and DVDs are cheap to mail. Just send me a PM. :)
