defrag

When I click on analyse it says to defrag the C: drive.
After defrag, it says some files could not be defragmented.
If I click on analyse again it says to defrag once more and keeps saying this regardless of the times I defrag.
What does this mean?

There are always chances that some files could not be defragmented, because

• they were in use
• or too large to defragment
• or not enough free disk space available
• or probably some other reasons

While it is a good thing to defragment your drive(s) from time to time, it is not essential for Windows performance that all files are 100% defragmented.

For instance you may have some very large files (like your mail files); these files are always read in multiple chunks, even if they are not fragmented. In such cases it really makes no difference at all if these large files are fragmented or not.

As I said, defragmenting is a good thing, but don't overdo it :cool

 

Iwas not concerned that some could not be defragmented; that is quite common.
I was concerned about the message that I NEED to defrag whewn i click analize even after I have defragged.
I have only used 10 GB of 40 GB. and have no large files.

The question remains, "Why does analyze say to defrag after defragging?"

It shouldn't. I would chkdsk /r and after it completes run sfc /scannow.

Then before you defrag, take out the trash. You can use CCleaner, or an optimized Windows Disk Cleanup utility.

I am glad that you undertsood my query as to WHY it kept saying to defrag after performing that function each time. I agree it should not have.
I will run both apps you suggest and perhaps the PiliformDefraggler tweaked Windows into perfoming as it should.

It is akin to changing your motor oil and checking the air pressure in your tires on a fairly regular basis. Staying ahead of trouble is usually easier than chasing after it.
In this case the Windows Defrag utility giving a quirky response is a bit like a front tire being a little low and the steering pulling a bit to one side.

 

Other than that it looks at the file system quite closely in order to do the middlin' job that it does.
I haven't used it since Windows 3.1, but in the OP's case it is indicating either a problem with Defrag itself or the file system. Can't hurt to check the disk for file system errors or bad sectors. If none are found, that's great, but if there are some, they can get repaired before they can cause more serious issues.

Well, now you have. I use them as proactive preventive maintenance measures, and advise it. I have in the past had chkdsk find and repair problems when there were no known issues of any kind.
I have also had sfc find and replace corrupt/missing system files when there were no known issues of any kind.
