Why to I have to fill in the login spaces every time I go to MG, even though I have checked "Remember me?"

    What browser are you using?

    IE8, fellow parrothead.

If you go from Major Geeks to another site and then back to MGs in the same browser session, do you get logged out? Or, is this just happening after you exit out of your browser and then try to come back here?

have you go IE set to delete cookies on exit? or do you run a cleaner like Ccleaner that would remove cookies by default?

It happens every time I go to the site, even when I have clicked to get an answer that has been emailed to me.

    No and no.

Just to clarify, if you come here and log in, then visit another site, then come back here without closing IE, you have to log in again?

That's right. It has been doing it for some time but I just thought that this happened to everyone who logged in. It's not a big deal but I just figured that at least Major Geeks should not have this problem.

    It's definitely not Major Geeks.

It has something to do with your computer or browser settings.

I meant this as a "tongue in cheek" comment. Far be it from me to put Major Geeks down.

I only know that this does not happen on other sites that I frequent. As I said earlier, it is not a big deal, so forget about it and I'll keep doing a manual log in each time.

No worries. I didn't mean it in any way other than we can keep trying to figure out what's going on with your computer if you want.;) Do you have any other browsers installed? You could try them if you do.

Hummmm.....curious. I never log out and only have to log back in if I restart my computer. Are you using tabs? Or are you having only one browser window open and then leave the site?

I also have to login more frequently than I used to.
No big deal, but I think it occurred recently, around about the time that Phillipp last had some major work to do on MG.

Makes no difference in number of tabs; I only use IE8. It always requires a manual log in, no matter what else happens.

Maybe Phillipp needs to do some more work.

    Hi

Do you use anythink like Ccleaner? as in any other cleanup allplication if you do then it also cleans cookies and that will force you to re-login each session.

Actually do install and run CCleaner and then use its cleaner tool to clean the Cookies as you may have a corrupted one causing this, then in ccleaner click, Options > Cookies and find forums.majorgeeks.com and highlight it and click the -> to add it to Cookies to Keep

Then reboot your PC and then login to the forum and click the remember me option and add user/pass and see if that works, but if your PC is not on 24/7 then you may need to log in again.

Nothing to do with what Philipp has done as I see no issues and use all the major browsers that most will, so know its not anything that Philipp has changed.

Much comes down the not checking the settings of file and temp cleaners to either not delete cookies or if they have the option to save the cookie from a said site in a safe storage area so its not cleaner with other general cookies, a kind of White List if you wish.

Well, I tried that and it didn't change anything.

    Thanks anyway.

    Hi

Do you have any cleaning or maintenence applications on your PC, that you may run say daily or weekly or run automatically, System Mechanic prehaps?

    Are you on DialUp internet?

I have just determined that if I don't log off but simply close the browser, the next time I come to MG I am automatically logged in. But I had thought that even if I have logged off or disconnected from the internet, I would still have my login info remembered and be logged in. Nevertheless, I am glad for any improvement.

    Thanks!

    Hi Ron

So at the end of a session on MG you would normally click "log off" in the forum page option to the top right? if so and I get your "log off" reference above then you would have to re-log in again, thats normal for this site anyways. But glad you have found a workaround that works for you :)

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

One more observation: some types of cookies are coded to expire - it's a security thing.
For instance: if I'm logged into MG and leave the browser for an hour, when I return and refresh, I'm logged out. This helps prevent unauthorized users.

Don't worry, used to do this to me for months. Now it works fine. Nothing changed, it just started working again.
