westboro baptist church is coming to my hometown to protest the funeral of a local boy who died over seas......i am severely ticked at this....they are coming to hick town where everyone and their sister has weapons this is not a smart move on their part....

seriously they need to be stoped.

Yeah from the war over there. We got all kinds of people and churches who do IMO wrong and not very human to me(means they make me sick). I was reading a while back where they were tring to stop protects and etc from funerals of dead ones.. But here people and churches come to people that die over seas war and protest against stuff that isn't even (war related) or something else... And I mean come on theres a time to do things, but not at a man/woman who just died across seas. I mean let them have there funeral like all men and woman should have the right to. I ve been to few where people protest right next to the casket when its prayer and quite crying time.. It just makes you boil to see something unrelated being protest.

edit- I forgot to mention one time I was with someone parent who lost there kid(my friend) and the father ended up going and punching one of those people over protesting against something unrelated. Cops called but cop felt/knew where dad was coming from he said, but still no need for fighting.

i hear ya i mean really these people are horrible......their entire church is only their family the one guy (micheal phelps) who said he didnt want a part of that religion was disowned by the family because he didnt believe in it.....that has to tell you something when the only people in your religion/church is your relatives.....im just glad im not the only one on major geeks that dislikes these people and what they stand for.

I apply the term "church" very loosely to this band of miscreants. I honestly think Christianity or religion as a whole has very little to do with their beliefs.
They are reprehensible and every true Christian abhors what they do.

A father of a fallen soldier sued this group, and won, but idiot judges on the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that decision on First Amendment grounds.

Absurd . . . limits to our freedom of speech abound, the classic being you can't yell fire in a crowded theater. Nor is speech that is designed to be hurtful or inflammatory always allowed or protected; and if protesting at a funeral isn't designed to be hurtful or inflammatory then what the heck is? Hate speech IS NOT PROTECTED. While the definition of hate speech seems to vary upon who it applies to and who is making the application, I can't think anybody would see such a display as anything but hate speech.

The case has yet to be heard by Supreme court, but in the meantime the father was faced with paying many thousands of dollars in legal fees - kudos to Bill O'Reilly and others for pledging to pick up the tab.

I hope these fools never show up in my city . . . but if they do they had better brace themselves for some serious "free speech" action on our end. ;)

    Winner post right there.

Not to get preachy, but let's look at the following bible passage from Jesus Himself.

"A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree bad fruit, but a good tree cannot produce bad fruit. Therefore, you will know them by their fruits."

The fruits of the WBC are spreading hate, discontent, creating conflict, etc. When Jesus said "Blessed are the peacemakers..." well, I don't see much peacemaking going on in their compound.

These morons have truly become a hemorrhoid on the butt of society. I'm familiar with the case Spad mentioned, as I'm sure you all are, and why these idiots think that infringing on a families grief and sorrow will change anything is beyond me. They show up at military funerals, they seem overjoyed at the death of a solider who fought and died for THEIR right to free speech....it makes NO sense! I Googled their name and went to their 'site' and the first thought I had was, to say the least, nauseating:puke I'm all for free speech, but these moronic imbeciles take that right to a new, lower level. What drives people like this to be so disgustingly obnoxious, disrespectful, and just plain inhuman?

Read about the group on WIKI. Repulsive!
India's famous for crooked cops. But for stuff like this, they'd sit back and let the nuts get thrashed to oblivion. A case would never get registered. Even the local crooked politician would use the influence of his/her office to deter the cops.

    Cheers..

They are either epic trolls or just really really sick, either way I don't see things ending well for them. There are rumors of several biker groups planning to show up and there is a lot of talk about bringing weapons and "needing bail money". This could get very very ugly and I am going to be there with my camera to catch it all.

Yes, these people burn me up too. I am concerned though that the Supreme Court will rule on their right to gather and their right to freedom of speech. Plus, they welcome the press coverage. About the only thing that should be legal is to literally surround these people when they are protesting with enough people that their presence is removed from sight and sound.

Unfortunately, freedom of religion and speech applies to conceited assholes who say stupid things, as much as it does to you and me.

Though to be honest, I like it that way.

Love to see what would happen to them at a "Hells Angels" funeral if they tried that crap.
I want the peanut and popcorn concession for that event.
The "Angels" would exercise their right to bare (not a mis-spell) :-D arms and would most likely use the left ones at the same time.rolleyes :cool

Two words for you Mrs Ace. Patriot Guards. I have seen them when fred phelps threatened to protest at a young soldier's funeral here. phelps and ilk did not show up. About 75 or so of the Patriot Guards did, just in case. Nice big guys on Harley's with American flags.

Great group, they probably know about it, but can't hurt to notify them. They do have to be invited by the family. http://www.patriotguard.org/

Very sad for a parent to bury a child. NO reason for protests like that during what is already a horrible day.

I've never heard of them, and from looking at their website, I don't know if I will like them or not. I'll hold of judgment until I meet members of the organization. :)

I do like their mission statement, and respect their intention and desire to keep outsider protesters away from what no doubt is one of the most painful days in a family's life. No parent should have to outlive their children, and if this group can keep the protesters away, why not give them a call?

    EDIT:

I didn't see this post before. Never mind then. :)

I will admit that I have a negative view of a lot of conservative patriots, because I have only ever seen the worst kind of them. I've never met the good side of them, and whether that is my loss or their negligence is for history to decide.

In the US State I live in, the last media appearance the "patriots" made was a very incoherent plea that The Holocaust never happened, and that it was in fact a fabrication of paranoid jews and "n-word people" (I don't want to use the word they used, as I find it deeply offensive).

That said, picketing a funeral is a disgusting thing to do. If nothing else, the mourning family deserves some basic decency and respect, and I will happily give respect to anyone willing to fight to give a grieving family that right.

Mrs Ace, be careful. While part of me says grab some extra mags and lock an load, unfortunately, they are legally allowed to protest, and violence would be the wrong response.

Probably the best thing to do would be to have so many people around, that the westboro bunch just decides to go elsewhere... Actually, several of the hate group are lawyers, so they do know the legal issues.

I heard fred phelps on the radio once in an interview. Gave me chills, you could hear the hate.

I can't believe that these people still get away with this crap! I mean picketing the funerals of people that died serving our country?!? Give me a break! You want to go protest a Lady Gaga Concert....? Fine. You're still stupid but whatever. Leave our soldiers alone.

  33. indyattic

It will be fine. The motorcycle guards will position themselves between the protesters and the funeral, and nothing violent will happen.

It's been my experience that most rednecks talk a big game, and I come from a long line of rednecks. I had relatives that lived so far up in the hills that I couldn't go up 'thar' if I wasn't with my Grandma, because they knew her car. If they thought I was a "revenooer" they would have fired shots.

Of course, if the town is liberal, violence is more likely.

I agree 100%. However it is very easy for them to excercise their rights without intruding on the rights of others. They can have their say . . . but there is a time and place for everything, Freedom of speech is not without bounds.

Being a conservative who considers himself a patriot, I can assure you that isn't a conservative point of view. Radical anti-Israel/white supremacists loons on the far fringe (kind of people like these "church" fools) like to think they are patriots. These self described "patriots" have the right to spew their hatred, just like the westboro nuts do, because we live in a free country. We just need to continue to counter such insanity where we can - fire some speech right back at 'em. :major

  38. Mimsy

100% agree. My rights end where yours begin.

I am aware of that, which is why I said "patriots" instead of patriots. Groups like these give decent people a bad name.

However, this is the exact same problem that Christianity and Islam has been facing in the US for years now: The reasonable, mature, and normal ones never get any media time. Only the very small nutcase-minority does.

That particular group by the way, is no longer in existence. They started to distribute written pamphlets that openly encouraged their members and sympathizers to seek out and assault members of the local Jewish community to "teach them their place". Free speech ends the moment you start to encourage the members of your group to commit crimes... arrests were made and charges were pressed and and the leaders and members of the group were found to be very blatantly guilty of inflammatory hate speech and conspiracy to assault people, and the organization's funds, both lands and money, were seized by the court.

The confiscated funds were used to build an Anne Frank memorial on the former neo-nazi property. Got to love a judge with a sense of humor LOL

I knew what you meant. :) You are exactly right, and it frustrates me that the media likes to focus in on the nutjobs . . . this only allows them to puff themselves up further. The only upside is they are exposed to the world that way, I guess. Lets people formulate some kind of response to them.

I remember that case! Now that is poetic justice. :-D
