Have you restarted the computer since the initial install. This article seems to say it may have something to do with no internet connection during install http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884564. So if you never restarted after XP installation try that first.

This thread might be of interest. I'm not running XP so I can't go through the procedure but you might try looking at RPC and DCOM services to see if they are set to Automatic. http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/369617-rpc-server-unavailable.html

The basic idea is the steps below. If both services are already set to automatic you don't have to do anything.

If the laptop is equivalent to that PCG-FXA36 model [I have looked at the specs.pdf for that model]. It should be integrated ethernet chip 10base-t 100base-tx

Strange that Sony doesn't have a chipset driver for that model.

Did you decide you don't have a wireless card in that laptop?

Pci simple communication device is just the modem. I wouldn't worry about that.

What do you have under Network Adapters in Device Manager?

  8. pongo

    pongo Staff Sergeant

In Device Manager, under network adapters it has other devices? pci simple communications controller?

my wireless status says packets sent 37 recieved 1. ?

An unknown modem is usually listed as PCI simple communications device. Have you downloaded and installed the modem driver? The correct modem driver is on your page of drivers. I realize you can't use a modem but it would eliminate that yellow question mark in device manager.

I think you are missing the driver for the integrated ethernet chip. I'm not sure how to find them. Maybe if you provided an Everest report or posted in the Drivers section of MG someone could help. Sometimes Everest will give enough detail that a driver can be more easily found.

Here is post telling how to generate an Everest report. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=1548038&postcount=2

is the driver you need according to the everest report below it is the nic you have in your computer.

You need to download the driver for it and then install the driver on your computer for your computer to be able to connect to the internet through it.

    http://download.cnet.com/Realtek-RTL8139-810x-Family-Fast-Ethernet-NIC/3000-2112_4-96337.html?tag=mncol;1

here is a link to cnet's download for this driver download and install it on your computer.

Take a look in Device Manager and see what is in Network Adapters.

Are you saying you can run some EXE files but not Explorer? How did you install the Realtek drivers--did you use setup.exe?

What is the Start the Internet icon? Do you mean Internet Explorer?

What about trying Firefox can you install that to test your internet connection.

You definitely shouldn't be having these problems with explorer on a new install.

Your HD passed SMART but is considered very old. I guess the only thing you could try is getting the Hitachi diagnostic tool for the HD (either bootable CD or Bootable Floppy) and see what it says about the disk. Sometimes the Advanced Test will give options to fix errors. I didn't read the whole User's Guide for the Drive Fitness Test but it seems to have a repair errors option that may or may not be helpful. I've had broken drives that once repaired worked for 2 or more years. http://www.hitachigst.com/support/downloads/#DFT

I use internet explorer to brouse the internet - Some people use somthing else. It might be your problem as you do not have an Internet brouser installed.

go back to add and remove programs in the controll panel and select add and remove WINDOWS COMPONITS
there should be a selection for internet explorer - you will need the xp cd.

    install it

ok but my explorer in windows components says explorer 0.0mb

    There are 2 diffrent explorers.
1 is windows explorer or just "Explorer"
    the other is Internet Explorer.
the 1st is a tree view of your computer instead of cycling down through mycomputer you can use windows explorer.
The 2nd is an internet brouser the reason its says 0.0 mb is becaue that is the space in the hd drive it uses if its not installed then it would read 0.0mb
is my guess not able to see your actual pc screen from here.
