1 big namer down and more to go. But even with Limewire closing it just means the people will go else where. I dont really like people downloading free stuff when I have to pay for it. But then again I also think movie and cds are high price. Not that it looks or seems high prices if buying few. But if you buy a 1 after another then it adds up. Personally the cash I spent on dvds when I had a good job I could have bought new nice car. But a collection is a collection that I wanted.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Someone asked me about this the other day, and asked "How can a song be a virus?" So, I showed them:

If I write a virus in text form, and either rename the extension as ".mp3" or attach the text to an .mp3, then the default program for opening .mp3s opens the text file - simple.
(Example attached - I named it a '.jpg', because 'mp3s' aren't supported by MG, but the file could just as easily been named '.mp3'. Don't worry: it's benign).

Limewire is infamous for such scripts - personally, I'm glad to see it go.

EDIT: the file appears to have been blocked, but that's a good thing! You get my drift.

    LimeWire has been shut down!!!

    :celebrate :dood

Limewire apparently lost their court case, and is no more. And I, for one, could NOT be happier!!! While Limewire itself was not at fault, the content downloaded from LW was a major source of malware and viruses. No offense intended, but it also seemed that the people that used Limewire were generally not the most tech savvy (or more on noob end of the spectrum), and didn't know how to protect/defend their PC from the crapola spread by the content at Limewire. Not only that, but many of the Limewire users had no idea that what they were doing was illegal. I have spoken to many people over the past years that assumed that because they paid for the "Pro" version of Limewire, that all their movie and music downloads were completely legal, because they paid for the software (but not the content). Anyway.... I'll stop my anti-Limewire tirade... I'll just say that I am VERY VERY happy that Limewire is gone.
    :-D :dancer :cool

I think music should be freely distributed but I'm still glad Limewire is gone it was a cesspool.

I've said to people if I find lime wire on their computer again I'll not fix it.

I have been trying to get a niece of mine to stop using LM but to no avail, her reply is always "if it's not legal why is it there" well now it's not there!

I have my doubts that we have heard the last of LM, no doubt they will find a way to continue pushing the rubbish out from another server.

I'd like to add something.Limewire have agreed to pay $5m compensation to the music industry which shows they must have made an astronomical amount of money.

They are what I would consider a perfect example of a pirate, even though I think music should be shared and nothing the courts can do will stop that EVER they have made money through other people's hard work which I totally disagree with, only the artists and copyright holders should make money from their work.

I'm kind of saddened by this, Limewire has made me quite a bit of money over the years.... from fixing peoples PC's who are tarded enough to use it :-D

The one thing that always bothered me about most about P2P progs like LW and Kaz etc was the fact that they were an open source for child porn, basically a free highway for the depraved, at least this avenue is now gone.... until the new one starts up.

I actually don't see how it stayed afloat for so long.

Good riddance. From what I hear the servers are still on line and one can connect, search and DL. Upon launch one gets a legal notice, warning of sharing any P2P. Question of time.

    Cheers

Unlike Napster, Limewire doesn't require a central server to share files. Also, there's still Frostwire, the open source P2P program based on Limewire's source code.

    Definitely not.

I've been expecting a flood of calls from clients/customers complaining "you just fixed my PC and now LimeWire doesn't work", but I haven't rec'd any just yet.... is LW actually down now? Or are they required to shut down at a given time/date in the future?

It's already shut down. They can no longer sell Limewire and their site has a big legal notice to that effect. The Limewire program will still work just fine though it is obviously no longer supported or updated. There is also Frostwire, based on Limewire's open source code and released under a GNU license.

I thought the whole client has or is gonna be come toxic?Anyone's version out there stopped working yet?

Everything before that update still works. Anyone with a 'toxic version' will simply downgrade or move to Frostwire, Shareaza or another Gnutella client. Anyways, it's open source so it won't take much for someone to strip out the 'toxic' switch.
