Just looking around, seems like those who had it fail the first time, attempting the update install a second time it worked.

    Did it work?

Yes. I went into update history, and deleted the failed update, then went to MS update via my start menu, and re-searched for updates. Downloaded the previously failed update a second time, and this time it succeeded in installing.
First i tried searching for new updates BEFORE deleting the failed one, and no updates were found (except for an optional update i dont want). So, it seems that even though the update failed, the MS website was still counting it is updated. Thats when I figured out how to delete it - through the update history screen - and then was able to successfully get the update. Thanks for the advice, guys. Another win for Majorgeeks !

Is it the weekend yet ?

    Almost!

PS A couple of words to the wise for future updates. First, always close everything -- ALL files, apps, programs, browsers, MS Office, IM messengers, etc. EVERYTHING -- before uploading any updates. Second, only upload one update at a time, and wait for a day or so to be sure that update hasn't caused a problem. (If it has, uninstall it and try uploading it again.)

Yeah I'm certain this is sage advice . I did, in fact, have several apps running while this particular set of updates dl'ed and installed . I never know when updates are gonna pop up on me, and tend to want to continue working and allow the updates to do their thing in the background. I rarely have problems with my updates - this may be the second or third time in 5 or 6 years, but I will probably start following your advice next time around.

"Overcautious" until you have a situation with many simultaneous downloads and one causes a huge problem --- but you don't know which one. So then what do you do? You have to go through the painstaking nightmare of having to deal with that, one at a time, when it all could've been avoided by just downloading one at a time, and then if there's a problem, you know exactly which one to uninstall.

I totally agree, by the way, with your suggestion of being notified before any downloads. I think that's very important, and would've been my next suggestion.

Yeah, it wasn;t long ago when microsoft released something like 17 critical updates at one time. I always download and install the "critical" ones (or whatever terminology they use) but then I look at the "suggested" ones and decide whether or not I want, say, Silverlight, or the MS Express package or whatever. I often do not take the optional ones.

Note: Haven;t had my coffee yet, please excuse terminology, spelling, grammar errors. I'm doing my best under the circumstances.

On another note, lots of good advice in this thread. This is exactly why I continue to return to MG. If my finances permitted it, I would most certainly donate, or purchase MG gear or something. I have receivec invaluable help here NUMEROUS times, and have also been able to help other people because of MG. I almost feel like I OWE MG - thats why, since I cant afford monetary support, I have lately been browsing threads looking for things I can offer advice on, but so many people here know so much more than I - I have been able to help a few folks, though and I guess since that what MG is all about, that may be as important as monetary assistance.
But i wouldn't mind buying an MG T-shirt, I'd certainly wear it !

    Thanks to all !

Oh yeah, I think I will set my updates to just "notify" so that, when I get to a good stopping point in my work/play on my computer, I can shut down all my apps and apply the updates. Good idea, Rick.
    Thanks again.

Ok I just set my updates to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" (Windows 7) .
    Thanks again, y'all.

I was going to start a thread on "Failed MS Updates" until I came across this one. :cool

I have my current laptop set to "Auto update" MS updates.
For years I had my update default set to "Notify" and I'll be setting it back to "Notify" real soon now.:-D

Yikes Bazz thats alot of failed updates. Did those failures occur while you had other apps running or was that computer idle ? I'm pretty sure that when windows notifies you the updates are taking place, it tells you to continue working . They might ought to tell you to close out other apps, as an install wizard does when you install new stuff. I also noticed that the updates that failed in your screencap had to do with office 2003 . . . ?

Yep, Office 2003. That is the latest I have. :cry

I have previously been operating successfully on Office 2000 up until recently. Maybe it is time to go back to Office 2000, or switch to Open Office.

The Office suite of programs is more expensive than a new laptop, here in OZ.

As for failed updates, they represent the same updates failing over and over again. As for when they occurred, I has all systems running at the time. Due to this thread, I closed down as much as I could and then ran the updates again.

This time 1 of the 4 worked. The other 3 keep failing.

Thanks Imperfect, I did close everything that had an "exit" option.
Some others like Network Internet Access, Speakers, Avast Anti-virus do not have an "Exit" option.
