Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

XP's core font is Tahoma, I believe - try replacing Tahoma.TTF, see if that's the quick fix.

You must have set something to 'Japanese'; check your Regional Settings.

Update your CCleaner to latest version, full uninstall and then reinstall, dont do an update.

Has your client installed any Japanese font packs or applications on this PC, if so uninstall them to test, as some can at times change as in your image the backslash to a yen symbol!! so check system font used.

Or have you fixed this issue with sach2's info?

Yup - I figured this out late yesterday before I read your post.... here's what happened....

As it turns out, at some point the owner of this PC did indeed have several Asian languages set up as alternatives to US English in the Regional Settings. Also, at some point the files on the hard drive associated with fixing this problem had become corrupt: when I went to remedy the situation and removed Japanese, Korean, and Chinese from the alternative keyboard settings, I was given the option of copying files from the HD or from the Windows install CD; I chose the HD files the first time, rebooted, and the problem remained; I went through the process again, but this time copied the files from the CD, rebooted, and now all is well!
    :celebrate

Thanks for all the input everyone!!!!

(BTW - I did try simply replacing the Tahoma fonts, but couldn't do it from the desktop because the fonts were in use, so I had to boot to PE, and replace the fonts that way, but it didn't make a difference)

No worries - we all skim through threads (at least I know I do) looking for facts, and occasionally we miss something.... ;)
