    Hello,

Been helping a friend with his system that's been infected.

Just yesteraday his system starting acting funny, it become very slow, and he started getting lots of pop-ups from FF & IE. And a pop up from windows defender saying trojan alert Unruy.H. He has had some BSOD also.

So he contacted me and I helped him a bit. Did a scan with MB & SAS, However SAS would Scan freeze up during the scan, (later on) Still produced log though.

From personal experience I helped him remove some stuff from Hijackthis, that was not good and knew it needed removing, and got him to run ccleaner and also bootkit. After the reboot from these changes his system was running much better, and smoother, and he don't get the pop-ups from FF & IE now. However defender still detects the Unruy.H. He also has a defmgr.exe stopped working sometimes.

Am sure the system is still not clean, but is better then it was, he said he got a nod32 error message just now though and defender popped up with the notification again. I noticed he had allot of file missing in Hijackthis but did not want to touch anything further then my own knowledge obviously.

He's running Visa x64. I've attached all the logs possible.

What do you currently have installed from symantec/norton?

Uninstall this rubbish which likes to invite nasties in

    • Messenger Plus! Live

    Uninstall this too

    • Viewpoint Media Player
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 18 <-- outdated Java.
Those are not problems 90% of the time. File Missing does not always mean it's actually missing at all! It is just the way in which HJT interprets it.

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into notepad, save it as something appropriate and attach it into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Answer any questions I asked and let me know how things are running now, please.

Thank you very much for the help.

He said he don’t use Norton, uses NOD as real time scanner, so not sure what’s that about.

Viewpoint Media Player, he said when doing the uninstall nothing happens when clicking yes, it don’t uninstall.

He's now getting Freeware implementation of REG.EXE has stopped working. He’s aslo getting .NET Runtime Optimization Service stopped working and was closed. But he said he’s had this for a while and don’t seem to be causing him any problems from before? It's like allot of Win32 files are failing on him.

When he un-installed SAS indows essentials said it’s detected a virus unruy.h.

After the new procedures he said his system started up faster, and is a bit faster in general but still getting some error's etc as shown above.

Logs are attached. However after I made the post he said he did some cleaning stuff his self so OTM may not find some of the stuff (I've told him not to do any extra stuff, only do what we tell him)

LiveUpdate (Symantec Corporation) <--- Uninstall this

Please give the Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) a run > reboot your machine and then run it again for good measure.
Who asked him to ununstall it yet?

The version currently installed is STILL out of date anyway, so he will need to do this because when he rescans more nasties will probably be found!

    Try using Your Uninstaller

Now double click C:\MGTools.exe again and attach the C:\MGlogs.zip.

    • The one he downloaded and installed was from the link you posted above, he downloaded that installed it, pressed update and did a full scan. What's going on?

I am getting him to follow the rest of the steps now, but I don't know what's going on with this SAS thing as we just followed the steps.

Also the first time I got him to run SAS we got it from their Website and it was the most recent version, he updated also:
      http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE
      Version: 4.45.1000

So something strange is happening as he's running the latest version supposedly.

Okay soryr for another reply, can't edit my other one.

I've got him to go through the SAS steps (again) and doing another scan with it soon. Hopefully this time it will be correct. Takes about 2 hours for his machine to scan with SAS though.

Only problem I've found with SAS, it's quite slow at scanning.

    • Norton removed after running the removal twice with reboots in-between.
    • View Point Media Player now uninstalled using Your Uninstaller.
    • Another SAS Scan done after another new reinstall and update.
    • Logs attached.

I guess it's a bit late for you now to be checking these, we will talk again tomorrow, I need to sleep. :wave

    Thanks.

It all depends how much is on the PC and how much SAS has to scan! And yes, you got the right version installed this time.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Not seeing anything else to do now, what problems remain, if any? (Malware related issues I mean)

He said he's not having issue's anymore, so I guess he's clean.

Thanks so much for all your help regarding these issue's, really appreciated.

    You're welcome! :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
