I am pleased to preview ‘Dead Drops’ a new project which I started off as part of my ongoing EYEBEAM residency in NYC the last couple weeks. ‘Dead Drops’ is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. I am ‘injecting’ USB flash drives into walls, buildings and curbs accessable to anybody in public space. You are invited to go to these places (so far 5 in NYC) to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your favorite files and data. Each dead drop contains a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is still in progress, to be continued here and in more cities. Full documentation, movie, map and ‘How to make your own dead drop’ manual coming soon! Stay tuned.

Interesting experiment . . . but knowing human nature I give it a month or less before some troll busts every one of them.

Sorry, but i would never let a strange, unprotected USB stick to plug into my young lappy.

I think us PC parents need to be responsible and keep close tabs on what our youngins' are doing.

That's as bad as a certain male body part sticking through a sheet. It may look appealing, but you just don't know where it's been!! Know what I mean, ladies?? roflmao

It's gonna get snapped or your USB port will get damaged unless you can hold your laptop perfectly until the file transfer has complete and its gonna rust away anyway.

Well, I suppose you could download whatever the Hell is in the USB drives onto any portable device that can read them, but yeah, "Do ya want some malware???"rolleyes
Smashing the sticks is just for the puerile vandal. ~ For some real fun put a good dab of super-glue on each 'stick'. Watch their faces as the motherboard gets ripped out of their laptops. LOL
