Windows 8 a 'Risky Product,' Says MS CEO

My note: It was relatively easy to convert Vista users to W7.
It is going to be a lot harder to convert W7 users to W8, IMHO. :-D

Now analysts reckon that windows 8 will be the last "windows" before we all go cloud.

Can't find the link as it was a few day old article. Sorry.

Damn!Cloud is a whole thread discussion all of its own,I'll go as far as to say I don't like the idea of cloud computing for anything other than basic apps.

Windows 8 is only a risky product if its crap :-D

Hi Rikky, I agree with you regarding Cloud computing.
We will all take some convincing to put all our apps on the Net, I reckon.

    Hi all

Cloud computing is and/or could be very good and at times many of us are using cloud based apps now, if you use Windows Skydrive or Windows Office Online/Google Docs for example you are using the "cloud"

This is one I'm interested in http://office365.microsoft.com/en-US/online-services.aspx as cloud products could save small businesses some money in that you dont have to buy the full products for multiple machines, but pay when you need to use them.

Pitfalls in "cloud" computing is that some areas and UK is one, in that the internet is pittiful and not as robust and quick enough for the majority to have the confidence in stability in using cloud based apps, its not the apps but our infastructure.

Cloud apps are not for all and not really for home users yet, they could be and would a cloud based OS work, may do but would have to try it out first.

Windows 8, well every product that Microsoft release is a "risk" these days, they have their followers and those that just hate everything because it has the Microsoft name name on it, but to top Windows 7, Windows 8 will have to really take on board many of the ideas from the techBeta group for Windows 7 on apps and ideas that didnt make Win7 as many I read are superb ideas.

Windows 8 and I have not seen it "yet" and this is just a guess on my part, could well tie in with Kinect (developed for the xbox360) very well and forget touchscreens and go for motion detection, kind of Minority Report actions to control a PC over physical keyboard and getting your grubby fingers all over the screen. Those that have touchscreen phones will apprieciate where I was coming from as the screens get grubby and dont look clear and nice, unlike your none touch LCD monitors.

Problem with touch screens is also one of stress to your wrist in having to hold your hand horizontal in mid air, unlike resting it on a keyboard.... Microsoft Surface overcomes this as its flat and you look down, but not many will like this approach to looking down at a screen over forward at it as watching TV/Films is not great.

So early days to really comment on Windows 8 until we see a beta, the pundits will be starting to guess and get sound bytes [sic] in to attract readers, but until its on your PC we can only guesstimate.

I signed up for Office 365 beta but got a canned response of basically saying to wait a few weeks and I might get it.:cry

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Agreed: the people around here know that, on pain of death, they better not touch my nice, shiny new Samsung 24" LCD!

I'm all for change, if the change is for the better and not just for the sake of 'change' - the motion detection and voice recognition technologies seem to be the way to go, especially for the handicapped. Many of my customers are elder, tactile-impaired users, and if Microsoft can in any way make computing life easier for these people, kudos to them.

I agree, changes have to be benefical and of use, some glitz and fluff over what Windows 7 is will not do.

Indeed on the accessability options and in Windows 7 that was one area I did concentrate on with the dev teams as I do work with visually impaired folk, so this was something I wanted to push for and some changes where made to this in the magnifier that is much more useful than that of previous versions of this, BUT we can add more options and voice and hand (not touch) controls maybe the way forward, especially for some users, when I see how Kinect works, intigrating this would be a step forward.

See if you can get in on the TechBeta on MSConnect when Windows 8 is announced and put your ideas forward as the ideas and DCRs are reviewed by the various dev team in the areas applicable in a techBeta if your are in one, as you have access to the newsgroups for that project, which are not accessable to the general public.

I agree. Obviously, it's going to be much harder now that Win7 has been on the market for some time.

Hi geohac, what I meant is that W8 will probably be harder to flog over W7, as many users have voted W7 the best MS OS, so far.
