windows updates won't download

Hi and help please. For some reason I can't get my windows updates to download. I've tried everything I can think of. It's quite a list now as to what won't load....

How are you trying to apply these updates - manual download, or via Microsoft Update?

If the latter, go to http://www.update.microsoft.com/, then click on Update History on the left-hand panel; it should give you a list of all (successful and failed) updates. If you click on the red mark of the failed updates, it will give you the error code, which is?

 

Thanks Pwillener. I tried to download the updates from the site first, but some still didn't go through. It said 1 failed and when I clicked on it, this came up:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

It said that there were five other high priority updates waiting to download and I tried to do those, but it said two of them didn't load, but when I did the History click, it again only said one failed and it is the one listed above. Hmmm, I'm confused. Any idea what's going on?

Some updates can only installed by themselves alone, not together with other updates - that .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is one of them.

On the review update history page, click on the red x (with a little question mark beside it); it should show you the error code. What is it?

Thanks Halo, will try it out. Read the Net Framework removal notes and it said to try a different approach first. Should I do that or is it safe to just go for it?

 

My approach would be a little different; uninstall all .NET as Halo posted but don't reinstall it until you weigh up whether or not you actually need it at all. A few days of use will tell you if a program you regularly use needs .NET, even if it does, there may be an alternative program you could use.

If you don't need .NET, you'll save hundreds of MBs of hard drive space, reduce security risks and probably speed up XP too.
