I'm looking to view and save VHS movies on my pc. What software is needed to do this?

I'm running Windows 7 and my video card and VCR both have S-video ports.

That's an S-video out you can't input video there unfortunately, you need to buy a USB PVR or a PCI card, don't skimp too much though cheap PVR's only convert the video at low quality.

They usually come with bundled custom software.

If you want to go rogue style you'll need a digital camcorder and a VCR. Use the "firewire" (IEEE 1394) port on your pc and the wire, of course. You can use Windows Live Movie Maker software. It's a free download.
You go from the VCR to the camcorder (with the AV cable it comes with) to your pc with the "firewire" cable."

Your VHS outputs an analogue RGB signal via SCART or DVI,or outputs it via RF the "round hole".

You therefore need an analogue signal input device,as far as I can tell that video card only has a digital input connector "HDMI" so you have no way of connecting your VCR to your computer.

PVR stands for Personal Video Recorder I use the term loosely to describe video converters but they are really called analogue to digital video converters, your video card is also called a PVR but but it can only record videos on your computer if you input a high definition digital signal via the HDMI input.

It's compatible with Windows Media Center - already on your pc. Maybe you could start there. If you have driver issues (it looks like you might), wait for the Majors.

Hook the S-video output of your VCR to the S-video input on your TV card and use the included RCA to 1/8 inch plug for audio. You should have the option to record from that input through your TV card software or Windows Media Center.

"The analog-to-digital conversion process is typically performed by connecting a VHS playback device, such as a VCR, to an analog video capture card installed in a computer. You then use a software program, such as Microsoft Windows® Movie Maker 2 or Windows Media Encoder 9 Series, to capture the content as the tape plays." ~ Microsoft

AVS Video Recorder 2.4.1.40 looks good too. It gets great reviews.
"Transfer video from VHS camcorders and VCR to your computer. Digitize your old VHS tapes."

Agreed, you can download the latest copies of the software for your card from.

    http://www.visiontek.com/downloads.html

Not sure if there's an app included with the software it looks just like a unified driver.

Here's a couple more links for you.

I've just been on a little joy ride tryna find out where you can get hold of a copy of ATI catalyst media centre as it has all the PVR functions such as capturing and recording video from S-video,seems you have to buy it on disk from ATI.

Have a look see if you can find the disks that came with your card.

Maybe I'm missing something,do the latest incantations of the the catalyst driver not have any media centre software included? Not used an ATI card for a while.
