Compaq SR5610F Win Vista, NEW HD

I installed a new HD, from NewEgg, an EXACT copy, same model and size. Got the "Recovery DVD's" from CMPQ. I can find and have run "manufacturer menu"...IE: reformat (supposedly with the "Manf Partition" as part of it)...still all I get is windows trying to start (not load mind you) and a blue screen with this message >

"This PC is not supported by the System Recovery Disks"
"You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these disks"

    <<<<<
Naturally HP/Compaq is no help. WHY won't it work? OH and BTW, What's with CMPQ tellin me I "HAVE" to buy there HD replacement, just so I can get the "utility" they install on their HD's so it will recognize the Recovery DVD's??? Bit greedy? Yes?

I am trying to help a Mother stay online, So any help would be appreciated.

    Thank You
    Eric

Check that they sent you the correct discs by comparing the build ID number.

Thank You Sach2 for the quick reply.

    Build # is identical.
So I am stuck not being able to use the recovery DVD's? (and I paid a lot for them hehehe, $16.99) I was hoping there was a way around that. And I am sure this mom will not have $200 plus for a Op Sys.

    OK, stumped now.

I can't see how they can mandate you buy their HD or even how the software would know.

What steps are you taking with the CDs?

Insert CD1 and what screens do you get? As much detail as possible would be helpful.

Well , off to bed soon, but will be on in the morning (EST)

put a disk in, shut off machine, turn back on. Then hold ctrl and backspace down, "manufacturer menu" starts. then do this [see below]
(as recommended by CMPQ help chat)
All it does is try to LOAD/Start Windows, (Not "Install" and NOT "Recovery Manager"), then I get that blue screen message. Each time it says "Recovery Manager" all it does is try to boot up windows.

    see ya tomorrow
    Eric

This procedure requires that you have a set of User-Created Recovery Discs (UCRDs) or Support-Sent Recovery Discs (SSRDs). Also, the Manufacturer Menu may not be available on all models. The Manufacturer Menu is not available from System Recovery Manager when booting from the hard drive.

    1. Turn on the computer, insert the first recovery disc into the first (top) optical drive, and then turn off the computer again (press and hold the power button).

    2. Turn on the computer and wait for the inital logo screen to appear.

    3. The next screen should be blank with a cursor blinking in the upper left corner of the screen. When the cursor drops one line immediately press and hold the Ctrl key, and momentarily press the Backspace key.

The Manufacturer Menu opens. If not, try again. If you cannot open the manufacturer menu, it may not be available.

    Manufacturer Menu:
<1> clear the partition table of drive 1
<2> erase the Master Boot Record of drive 1
<3> wipe all sectors of drive 1
<S> Save DMI Sysinfo to drive 1
<T> Test the system RAM for defects
    <ESC> restart this CDROM

    4. Select option clear the partition table of drive 1 .
The screen goes black displaying a blinking cursor. After a few seconds the Recovery Manager screen opens.

    5. Click Cancel on the Recover Manager screen to restart the computer

    6. Turn on the computer and repeat step 3 to open the Manufacturer Menu.

    7. Select option erase the Master Boot Record of drive .
The screen goes black displaying a blinking cursor. After a few seconds the Recovery Manager screen opens.

    8. Click Cancel on the Recover Manager screen to restart the computer

    9. Turn on the computer and repeat step 3 to open the Manufacturer Menu.

    10. Select option wipe all sectors of drive .
An Erasing Hard Drive progress bar displays at the bottom of the screen. All data on the hard drive is erased and replaced with new data. This process can take a considerable amount of time, depending on installed RAM, the size of the hard drive, hard drive speed, CPU speed, etc... (approximately 250 GB per hour).

    11. After the hard drive is erased the Recovery Manager screen opens. Read and respond to the screens to complete a system recovery.

is there a way to get this off the old drive, as Linux will see the whole drive?

    Have a good night.

    Doesn't sound promising http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6142_102-297832.html

Is the old HD formatted or dead or is it still accessible? If still accessible is there a hidden D: partition (where the actual recovery image is apparently stored) still available?

Sorry for the long hiatus (last week, LOL) :-o

When I run Linux off CD, it can find the factory drive AND the "1/primary" drive and all files on it. tried copying that factory partition to new drive, it copied but Nope No Go.
Compaq's DVD still will not recognize. I still can't find their mysterious "Recovery Manager" either.
My own machines are 8 yrs old and are P4 333mhz. Run just fine though. So I have no way of testing the new HD besides using my Apricorn adapter.

    So still stumped :confused

    Hello,
If you have the recovery partition on the original drive, it can be copied using a Gparted Live CD.

    Copying a partition in Gparted

It might also be possible to clone the drives using something like Easeus Todo backup or HDclone. This will give you an exact copy of the original disk. Then try the restore disks if you want to take it back to the original state. Was something wrong with the original drive?

As a side note. Not sure about HP drives but I do know that you cannot swap out a wireless card because the BIOS has a whitelist of only HP cards that are allowed.

I used my Apricorn and cloned the disk, still won't work. not the recovery disks made, or the Compaq Recovery DVD's. Keeps saying after a small winVista install screen, then in a blue screen this ,,,

"This PC is not supported by the System Recovery Disks"
"You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these disks"

And Compaq/HP says these are the right disks.

Is this a case of HP givin me the crap? clap? and a dumpster heaving is in order?

    Man am I frustrated.

    Eric

ps: original problem was a blue screen and nothing else. would not recognize recovery disks.

You've been asked twice now about the status of the old hard drive. How about an answer? Does it work or not? And, if it works, why was a new drive installed?

Status of old drive.....in it's own case it will do boot up screen (black screen), then try to start windows, gets a blue screen,,,, and STOPS, Nada, Nuttin, sits and hangs.
same drive with Compaq's/HP's recovery DVD's in DVD drive... tries to install windows, then blue screen and message I have previously posted twice.
same drive in same case, runnin Linux, You can see Factory partition, and main partition, can access all files.
SAME drive hooked up to my Apricorn adapter, hooked in to my WinXP machine.. nada, nuttin, not even a burp.

in a word (or two)....IT DIED ,, gave some I/O error once, haven't seen it since.

And if you are a USAF Vet, may I say Thank You for your service.

    Hello,
I am not familiar with the Apricorn adaptor. Does it do a sector to sector clone of the hard drive? I assume that you have the recovery partition on your new drive after the clone using Apricorn. Can you get into the recovery manager by tapping the F11 key as the new drive is trying to boot? If you burn a Gparted Live CD and look at the drive, do you see the recovery partition on the new drive?

  14. cuddlepuppy

    cuddlepuppy Private E-2

Not sure if Apricorn copies sector by sector. I tried Gparted, nothing there either, gets a paste error when trying to paste to the new the drive.

F11 just brings up as F1 does, the BIOS.

Yes it see's the partition, but can't seem to copy it.
When I was loading Gparted (from CD) it says a "SBA 0" error. Which is also what I saw one time when first trying to boot, that there was an I/O error. can't see "partition 1".

Did you try pressing F-11 during boot on the original drive?

    Yes .....

I don't have any new ideas. Just one more time for clarification:

The original HD has not been formatted or had the partition table deleted in Maintenance Mode. (mentioned in post #5) So the original HD is in the same condition it was in when it stopped booting to Windows.

The original HD using either set of Recovery CDs gives error message these discs are not compatible.

Maybe you could try running a HD diagnostic from the manufacturer on the HD to determine if it is really bad. Bootable CD may be easiest to test drive in its own case. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

[My only workaround for the Compaq requirement for using their own HD would be to get the recovery CD/DVD to work with the original drive. Reload XP. And then clone everything over to the new drive.]

Weeeeeeeeeeeellllllll, it seems to have gone away. No can find, not even thru Linux.

    Correct !

Will try this soon, it's off to work for another week, Usually am too tired at night to mess with this thing.

no answer for here, as I think the factory partition is gone.

All this just to find an XP disk....

    Ok , here we go....

Compaq SR5610F, "HAD" Vista. old HD died, new HD will not accept CMPQ's recovery DVD's. I am NOT paying $299 for their HD's, GEEEZ...just so it will have their security code (ROMPaq) on it. So found a licensed copy of XP. Now I need the drivers for it. CMPQ/HP's website doesn't list anything for XP. I did a look around and some sites "say" this is for XP, but notes lower down say VISTA ONLY.

    MB = MCP61PM-HM rev# 1.0B

    Please and Thank You

    Eric

PS: not even sure if MB is 32 or 64 bit, "System Prop" says "AMD Athelon 64x2 (dual) ( XP is pro version)
