Something is changing permissions to "everyone"

Anytime I try to run a Malwarebyte scan, a Mcafee virus scan, a SuperAntiVirus scan, a Spybot scan, or a Hijackthis scan, the program will start running, then just stop with no logs generated. The permissions on the .exe files that run these apps will be set to "everyone", and all other permissions removed. If I try to run the app a second time, I get an error message that "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file." If I set the permissions back to what they are supposed to be, I can run the app again, but the same thing happens. Program stops running, and the permissions are changed again. Not sure what to do since I can't even run a hijackthis scan in order to send you a log file. In fact, can't run any kind of scan to get started.:(

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
    1. Rkill.exe
    2. Rkill.com
    3. Rkill.scr
    4. Rkill.pif
Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then double click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Now download and Run exeHelper
    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
    • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. See if you can save a log with it.

Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools

Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:
    • C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
    • a log from online SAS scan if you could make one
    • log.txt - from exeHelper
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools
The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

I was able to run everything except the SuperAntiVirus online scan. It ran about 5 minutes, and then just stopped. No log was generated. It did, however, detect Trojan.Dropper/Svchost-fake and Trojan.Dropper/Win-NV before stopping. I have attached the requested logs and the zip file from MGTools.

This is not looking good. You have a new form of infection that has been giving everyone trouble in removing it. The below seen in your process list is the problem. Please hang in there a while if you wish to persevere with attempting to remove the malware, as Chaslang will need to take a look at this.

Thanks for your time. I'm ready to "continue the fight" to get this thing resolved, if possible. Just let me know what the next steps are. By the way, I didn't see anything in your last post about what the process is that's causing the problem.

Kestrel13! meant to post the below is in your logs:

    \\.\globalroot\systemroot\system32\mswsock.dll

I suggest that you backup important data and then perform a clean reinstall as this malware has no reliable fix that always works. We could spend a lot of time trying experiments on your PC if you wish to continue but it may still wind up that you will have to reinstall.

For the reinstall, can I just do a system recovery from the recovery partition that comes on the laptop, or will I need to format the entire drive to get rid of this "bug"?

That should work okay. Just remember to back up your data first because using the recovery partition returns the PC to the state it was in when you took it out of the box. All your personal data, and everything you put on the PC since that time will be gone.

Thanks to Kestrel13! and Chaslang for their time in trying to repair this problem. Looks like it's going to be quicker to save the data, and reinstall, rather than trying to repair this bugger.
