I friend of mine has a BluRay drive in his PC and just recently dumped WinXP and went to Win7 X64 Home Premium. He's looking for a codec pack and media player that has full support for BluRay and standard DVDs (and -of course- audio CDs, media files like AVIs, MKVs, etc). He's not real happy with the software that was included with the drive, so any suggestions about some good freeware or a codec pack will be appreciated. Does one of the KLite packs support BluRay?

    Thanks!

Yeah - I think the drive had a CyberLink program bundled with it.... I don't think it was PowerDVD though :confused I think it was some type of 'limited-feature-free-OEM-if-you-want-decent-functionality-you'll-have-to-toss-some-bucks-at-us' version of PowerDVD. Whatever it was, he wasn't happy with it. Why? I have no idea. If I remember, he found it cumbersome and it required too much interaction; he couldn't just pop in a BluRay and have it start playing. It asked a bunch of questions at first about resolutions, 1080i, 720p, aspect ratios, and a bunch of stuff the average person isn't real familiar with. So . . . . am I to assume that there is NO freeware BluRay codec/player?
    Whhhyyyy!?!???!!!?!!!??? :cry

Same thing when DVD just came out. I guess. There are works in progress. Yes, mostly due to MPAA needing copy protections. I won't go further than that.

I bought an ASUS drive that the salesman said could play BD. I put it in and same thing as your friend; tons of pop ups at start up for cyberDVD.

Went to their website and downloaded version 9 free 30 day trial. When that ended, downloaded version 10, 30 day trial. I wanted to buy the Samsung, which has all software included, but salesman said ASUS was so much better.

when you download trial, you can buy upgrade for like 30% off. I think it costs $80 for cyberDVD 10. After my trial runs out, I will prob buy it.

The playback in DVD format is amazing, let alone BD. I have 1080p 600hz plasma, and 1080p 60hz lcd and I sware I can barely tell the dif between DVD and BD with this codec. You can customize the picture SOOOO much. Excellent software, and I guess it plays 3D, but I haven't found a disc.

I don't think you really need a 3D capable tv, like Panasonic markets. I think its just the software. Could be wrong, and way off track, sorry.

I do not work for or have any thing to do with cyberdvd, I am by no means trying to sell anything, just to be clear. Just giving personal feedback in regards to post.

Is it just sorftware that's needed to play a Bluray disk on my Dell laptop with Windows 7?

No you need a Blu-ray drive and then the software on top of that.

Can the bluray drive be fitted into a lappy?

You should be able to, but I would think it would be very expensive. You may want to look into an external Blu-ray drive that plugs into your usb.

Yeah, I know it's "taboo" to resurrect old threads, but I have some pertinent info in regards to BluRay playback of the open source variety.... according to this article, the RC release of VLC has playback support for encrypted (meaning "commercial store bought") BD movies. However, tracking down this RC release was a bit tricky. I couldn't find it at the VLC home page. I did find at it at "another site". Just do a Google search for "VLC 1.2" and you'll find it. However, I don't have a BD drive in my PC so I can't vouch for the effectiveness of this RC release of VLC and it's BD support, so if someone wants to check it out, please do so and post your results.
