    XP by far.

I'm sure some will voice an opposing opinion, but IMO vista sucks big hairy ones. :p

I'll have to agree with Q. I've run 3 machines with Vista, 2 got real buggy and required reinstalls. This can happen with XP as well, but I don't think as often.

Just be sure to get all the updates through service pack 3. And you should have at least a gig of RAM.

Support for XP SP3 goes until April of 2014.

I also would say XP, less memory needed to run, no Software compatibilty issues. :)

I would go with XP. Vista is a nightmare and Win 7 is not much better. Lots of problems installing and using programs. I would have in hindsight bought a new laptop with XP vs. Win 7 or Vista.

All that being said: if you decide to throw away the Vista disk, let me know - I'll find a use for it. ;)

I never had issues with vista except for it's handholding of every move I made. I liked it after turning UAC off. W7 is even better IMO as it has native support for all sorts of nifty hardware and I find them both more stable than XP. Don't get me wrong, XP was/is an excellent OS but it is getting long in the tooth.

    Long live XP :)

Agree with auggie on 7, i like it a lot (it is my main OS now)

But I'm a die-hard XP fan, unless something drastic happens I will be running it forever.

Well we're running the lot here - XP, Vista and Win 7 (and Ubuntu). For us they have all been reliable and competent and are capable of virtually anything most users might want to do. The big issue in deciding which is best to install is the availability of drivers for the hardware you want to use. But if drivers weren't an issue then Win 7 would be my choice - and by quite a margin too, followed by Vista, then XP :)

Older hardware and peripherals, stay with XP. If the rig has less than 512MB of RAM, upgrade the RAM TO 1gb+ and upgrade to SP3; if the 512MB is RIMM memory, stay with SP2.

Newer hardware and peripherals and 1.5GB+ RAM, Vista - if you can tame it ;)
