NRA phone calls

Ugh! The NRA has been calling our house at least once and sometimes twice a day. I don't even know what they want because they've only actually responded to my 'Hello' once asking for my husband. Now, I'm not getting any response.:(

They remind me of the debt collectors calling our house for a relative of my husband's. They'd just keep calling back day after day no matter what you say or if you answer.

This is the type of thing an organization should get heavily fined for, particularly if you are on the Do Not Call list.

    Why are they calling though?

I don't know! How weird is that? The one time I answered, the guy asked for my husband. When I said he wasn't here, he said we'll call back. Now no one even responds when I say hello.

Apparently they are a problem with a lot of people. I looked it up online and there are tons of complaints about them...even with the same number that shows up on my caller ID. Personally, for the amount of money we pay for phones anymore, we should be able to block individual phone numbers.

A little trick i use on telesales folk and the like, is [when i know its them] I answer the phone and say "FRONT DESK" (for some reason i always put on a yorkshire accent.. dont know why) :)

And then if they ask for anyone i say quite forcefully....

"you do realise you phoned the police station don't you?"

It usually results in them saying.... "er... erm... oh... erm... sorry wrong number" and then hanging up.

hahaha...I might try that. That's if there's ever anyone on the other side of the line.

oh yes, we have these fiddly little digi' cordless house phone things that are like mobiles so they display the number on the screen.

We also have a service where anybody calling from a withheld number gets rejected.

One of my cousins has a good one [for when he's in other peoples houses] he answers the phone and says...

"big boys massage parlour; Big boy speaking"

He does this regardless who is calling :(

Hahaahahaha I need an eye test as I read the thread as CIA phone calls :( thought what the hell have you been upto ;)

Can you email to report the nuisance calls via the NRA website (I'm gussing here but NRA is National Rifle Assoc)?

lol...I've been up to things, Dave, but nothing the CIA would be interested in.:-D

Now I would ask the same of you since you read NRA as CIA...heheLOL

Yep, the National Rifle Assoc. I'm not sure why they are calling anyone, honestly. Believe me, neither of us are members.

I reported them to our national Do Not Call list (government), but maybe I'll try the site too.

Well my absence from the forum for the last month is well.........

But on the NRA I would imagine they are pollsters gauging your intent on gun law prehaps, have you any new votes coming up in Congress or the House on this issue? IIRC pollsters can randomly select folk to call and are persistant buggers at times.

So yeas see if the NRA have employed a company to cold call or not and if so then have them remove your number from their list.

I called the number after looking this up online and it's actually on my caller ID. It's Strategic Fund Raising for political and non profits. :rolleyes

There's an option to 'opt out' if you plug your number into their do not call database. They already obviously have my number so I'm trying it this way. We'll see.

    Hi Laura

Indeed try the opt out, as it seems like pollsters/fund raisers after adding $$$ to their warchest for any new election campagins for politicians who are pro their cause.

My favourite response to unwanted or cold calls is, Hello, Harbour Master at Gourock, sea state rough, visability poor,, please hold for further information.
I then put the phone on the table and wait until i hear the disengaged signal.

Funny stuff. Odd, the NRA never calls me. :-D

Laura, just tell them you are not a 'bitter clinger', and your husband is in jail for threatening to shoot all the llama's in your state. :cool

Don't let them hear any gun related noises, like loading a shotgun. That gets 'em fired up, and they will put you on the frequent callers list. :-D

Thats because they are scared of your Fred, you have more guns than they do ;)

hahaha Fred. I had originally addressed this to you asking if you had any contacts you could call to help me out. :-D

Ahh, thought it was common knowledge they can pack more guns and ammo than other beasts of burden? :-D

Actually, I picked llamas just so nobody would seriously think I meant for someone to make perhaps an unintended threat involving guns and shooting. ;) There were no llamas injured in this thread. :cool

LOL, you should look at some of the gun forums. I am not even 1/10th of the way to a proper arms cache... You think I have a lot of guns, some of these people have a LOT of guns.

In all seriousness, why not just call the NRA? Ask them why they are calling you, and tell them to stop! I am about to renew my membership with them, if you want I will call them next week and ask. PM me if you want me to ask them about it. It is one thing to make an occasional political call, or membership drive call, but it seems whoever is calling you has gone beyond what I would consider normal. I might not want to remain in a organization behaving like that.

Oh, and I thought I'd throw this out there: It's possible whoever is calling Laura and bothering her isn't actually a member of the NRA but is using the name to hide behind what's nothing but basic phone-spam behavior.

And a good reason to let the NRA know about this. If it is some unusual activity, it might be in their best interest to look into it.

That's why I wanted to mention it, actually. I doubt any sincere organization would want to be associated with spamming and phone harassment.

Although if there are as many reports about it online as Laura said, it's probable they already know and either don't care or can't do anything to fix it. Me, I'm the type to call whatever organization/business it is and ream them a new one over stuff like this. :)

Well, I haven't received any calls since entering in my number for them not to call, so hopefully that'll be the end of it.

As far as companies go, I think I'm jaded, I just assume the people calling for them won't care and will ignore you if they don't have any motivation to take your number out.

Absolutly.. I agree Fred, who know what some pollsters and organisations will do to get support or funds.

Good on not getting any more calls Laura, indeed lets hope this is the end of it,

Just an aside, and probably not related - But I recently got a call from the "NRA" . . . but it wasn't the "National Rifle Association" . . . it was the "National Recovery Agency" - a debt collection outfit that was looking for my x-wife.

May not be the same thing Laura is talking about. I answered the call and told them that A) My divorce was final 9 years ago; and B) My x-wife has never lived at my current address; and C) they damn well better not call me again. They never did call back. :-D

Here is the NRA dba National Recovery Agency website, just for the heck of it - http://www.nationalrecovery.com/

I'm a member of the National Rifle Association and never get calls from them. Lots of mail, but no calls.

Missed this post - so my call isn't related. For those having a problem like Laura with fund raising calls the link to opt out is:

    http://www.strategicfundraising.com/DNC.aspx

LOL Mind if I borrow that next time I get some unwanted sales calls? I almost fell out of my chair when I read that.

I have a situation like that except it's a fax machine that calls my cell phone at midnight on the dot Monday through Friday, it tries three times then gives up. I know it's a computer somewhere sending out what I assume is a daily mailer to a set group of numbers. I even tried to forward the calls to a real fax machine but I could never get it to work. I was hoping I could at least figure who it is coming from and call them to explain and get taken off the list. The number: 000-000-0000. That's a hard one to track down.

Thanks Spad, I entered my number just for good measure. That's who the calls were originating from since I dialed it. We haven't gotten any calls in the last few days. Hopefully, it worked.

Now, that would be horrible getting calls at midnight! I would think you could call your phone company at some point for that.

I have 000-000-0000 set up as a number in my phone book now with it's own personal ring tone: Silent, no vibrate. I just have 3 extra missed calls everyday now.

Option 1: "This is a harrassing phone call, if you call again, I will call the police." Stopped a bank from repeatedly calling trying to force a credit card on us. (This was back when they wanted you to have them.)

Option 2: Buy a whistle. After you get a person, blow the whistle, as hard as you can. Yes it's cruel. By the point I use this tactic, I don't actually care any more.
