I dont know if this is the right place for this, couldnt put it in the other forum

But does anyone know if this new 2011 AVG free is okay to use now

There wewre some bugs when I installed it last time, my PC froze up and I had to uninstall it in safe mode

I keep getting the usual pop up telling me to install it

What happens if I dont, but still continue with my 2010 version ? with the updates ?

I have Malwarebytes on my system as well though, do I need them both ? I havent encountered any problems with them at the moment, just this AVG free 2011 worries me

I use XP pro on mmy desktop and Windows 7 ultimate on my laptop

APOLOGIES if this is in the wrong place

We no longer recommend it. You can read this:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

We suggest you use Avast, Avira or Microsoft Security Essentials. And keep both Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware as back up scanners.

No! That is not an anti-virus program. It is an anti-spyware program. You need a good AV along with that. I really suggest you uninstall AVG and go with one of the other AV software programs that I mentioned. ( I edited my last post, which you may not have seen. )

I cannot see any information in that link why AVG is no longer recommended. (Or are the two unconnected? If so, why is AVG (free) no longer recommended? I have AVG 9.0 and 2011 on several machines with no problems.)

They removed it from the list of recommended anti-virus programs.

Probably because it's not very good anymore. Avast and Avira have surpassed it by far.

Also, their customer service is awful. My father bought the pro-version and it took them 9 months to get him the right product key. When he did get it, it was only good for the 3 months left from when he purchased it. He tried to get them to do the right thing and give him the one year he paid for but they refused.

I always like to know what is being compared.
Texan, if you look here http://dottech.org/freeware-reviews/14151#detection scroll down until you see the name of version of the four av programs.
You will see that Avira and AVG are the paid versions while the other two Avast and MSSE are free.
To me, it isn't a true comparison unless all products are free version comparisons.

AVG is conspicuous by its absence. It has become bloatware and is now so bad that we have to make users uninstall it in order to run malware scans. Many people have made complaints about it recently. It has gotten worse since version 7.5.
