So, I've had my Logitech 5.1 THX Z5300 speakers for 6 years now (which were excellent!) and they are almost dead now, literally. I'd like to see what others have and like these days. Please, nothing more than $500.:)

I reckon it depends on if you like top-notch, unbeatable, never-faltering sound quality, or you like that hard hitting, thumping, heart pounding, bone shattering, stomach liquefying BASS.

So which do you like :p

I like music so then it's
    ;)

    OUCH!! That hurt! :p:-D

Then yeah I'd be going for something along the Harmon Kardon line like the bigfurrythingymawut suggested :p

BMW actually uses HK systems as their top of the line Audio setups.

The budget has changed to half of what I said, $250 now.:cry Fortunately Digerati mentioned a pair of M-Audio AV40's in another thread as I was looking at some Logitech 2.1 Z-2300 200W RMS but I'm wary of their sub-w being too strong even at the lowest bass setting, as that has been my and plenty of other's experiences. So, I think I'll give up the extra 160W RMS and 50Hz in low-end response as this old hippie's ears are shot anyways.;)

Hey Aug, you must be referring to my thread. Buying any type of audio has always been a crap shoot.
Even if you get to listen to it in a store, it never sounds the same when you get it home. :cry
    Too many variables.
Different computer components (IE sound cards) can make the speakers sound different. Different sized rooms for a home system and those 6 X 9's sound way different in the sound room at Stereo World, than they do in a 1984 Buick Lesabre.

I've actually returned 2 Home Theater systems, before deciding on the one that I have now and I don't believe that I've reached the full potential of this system, possibly due to speaker placement and improper adjustments.

Thus, we rely on the opinions of others. :confused

Not too sure what I'm going to do. I have a couple small sets of bookshelf speakers that I may try to hook up to the pc before spending any cash.
Besides, I will have to wait until after the holidays to get away with buying anything for myself. ;)

Yup your thread, and it is a crap shoot unless one gets a professional installer.:eek Anyways, I'm just going for decent sound at a reasonably loud level and within my budget. I wish I could afford more but so be it as this years money went to building my i7 rig. Priorities.;):-D

I have to be subtle when doing upgrades, so as not to set off too many alarms.

I built my rig almost 2 years ago and it has been great, but since the build, I have added a few minor tweaks.

I have yet to even test it's capabilities and it's only a dual core.

I get an itch to upgrade, even when not needed, so piece by piece, it will adapt into a more powerful, faster machine.

As for speakers, I'm more of a music listener, than a gamer. I'd like a system that sounds good at all volumes, even though the only time I get to crank up the music is when I'm alone in my car. :cool

I can probably get away with spending $100, but any more might get me in trouble. My 2.1 Logitech sound fairly decent for the $30 that they cost, so I figure that if I up the $$ a little, I should be able to improve upon that.
That is until I get another itch that those speakers can't quite reach. ;)

Being out on disability, I have way too much time on my hands! :-D

BTW, I bought a pair of M-Audio 40W speakers. Studiophile AV40 Desktop 2.0, I can't afford another 5.1 like my dead and defunct Logitech Z5300's which were good but I don't need that. I should have them early next week and will post my opinion.
