Is there a program or a way to add to or edit the 12 message conditions in Outlook Express e-mail message rules set-up?
I want to create a message directing all e-mails with an MS Office .xls file attachment into a specified folder? Only an .xls attachment, not every attachment.

My OS is WinXPSP-3 using Outlook Express 6.
    Thank you so much!

Hi tarmin8or :wave I am also using Win XP SP3 an d OE 6. Sure, you can set any rule you want.

Open OE. Click on Tools. Message Rules> Mail

Now, form there, you will have another box open, you can create any rule you want, if it is FROM someone in particular, you can even have it go into a specific folder.

For instance: Select: all from MS Office
    '
To be put into a specific folder that you have already named, like MS Office.

All the tools you need to work with are already there. You can even block any e-mail address from there also.

Hope this helps ya, and if you have more questions, just holler!;)

I used Message Rules in OE for a long time but I've never tried using a file type for an attachment as a criteria for a rule. TeeCee, are you sure that can be done? It seems he/she has reviewed the 12 message conditions in Outlook Express e-mail message rules set-up and found no such option.

    Thank you!
Yes i know i can create different destination folders and apply certain rules or combination of rules to direct an e-mail, but I want to know if there is a way that I can create my own conditions and add to the 12 conditions already listed.

I want to create a condition that "where the attachment file is or contains .xls" ....then I can direct any e-mail meeting that condition to a specific folder. The only option that currently is listed is an e-mail containing an attachment. No specific type of attachment is given to be an option.

Hi again, Yes, USAFVet it can be done. I have done it ;)

    OK< try this:

Open OE: Click on Tools at the top of OE, then Message Rules> Mail

    Check NEW
    Tick New Mail Rule
    Tick "When subject Contains Attachment"
    Tick: "Move to Specified Folder"
Tick Specified folder, and it will ask you what folder to put them in.
    Click OK

Also, you can edit that rule, to include any specific attachment.

Not too hard, just one of those parts you normally don't look into. Yes, you can even make new folders, for these messages to go into. ;)

Thank you! Did that but now....where is the option to "edit that rule" to specify only a certain attachment type such as .xls files attached?

Although TeeCee's instructions are correct for Creating a new Mail rule, there still
is not any means for specifying a "filter" such as a file type or extension.
To make sure, I just tried that and created a new 'Attached xls" folder as the destination in the 'New Rule' process.
After rule creation, selecting "Modify" does Not present any additional options.

As tarmin8or suggested in the original post, it seems what is needed is an external or add-on tool that might provide that option.

Is there a programer or code writer that could write a vbs to create an editable message condition or is there someone who could tell me where to go in the registry that would allow additional condition filters to be added to the 12 currently available? Or... yes, an add-on or OE application that would allow for tweaks that include the ability to create and add message rule conditions. I would think there is somewhere in the registry that those current 12 are listed and would allow for more to be added....????
Thank you for trying to find an answer, I appreciate your help!!!
