Before I begin, I would just like to say that I am aware that many issues regarding Ubuntu wireless connection have been addressed and solved on this and other forums. I have followed many of the solutions that I have come across but none of them have helped me thus far.

I only started using Ubuntu less then a month ago, so I'm not very familiar with the ins and outs of the system yet. I went through the initial shock that wireless wasn't working when I first started out, but I got my hands on the proper drivers and everything started working fine.

But about a week ago, our old router died on us and we replaced it. And since we set up the new router, I have been having serious headaches trying to get Ubuntu to connect to it.

At first I connected fine, but then after about half an hour the connection dropped. After this I was unable to connect. I spent quite a bit of time trying the usual things, ei. restarting router, restarting laptop, mucking around with various firewall and security settings. But none of this worked.

But when I ran a factory reset on the router, my laptop was able to connect again, at least for a while. Connection dropped, again after around half an hour. I'm dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10, and the wireless works fine in windows.

I have also tried completely reinstalling ubuntu but that didn't help. Its really inconvenient factory resetting the router multiple times per day, and my housemates certainly don't appreciate it.

Also, I have 2 housemates running ubuntu 10.10 who haven't encountered any of these problems.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Can you connect to the router with a browser with something like 192.168.1.0 ?

Is there security on the router to be enabled on Ubuntu?

Brand of router and version of Ubuntu

I went through the process of factory resetting the router again, so i have internet in Ubuntu, at least for a while.

I am able to connect to the router through 192.168.1.1, but that only works for the short period while I'm connected after factory reseting.
The security of the router is set to WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].

I'm running ubuntu 10.10 and the router is a Netgear RangeMax wpn824v3.

it it's a wireless router, instead of using 192.168.1.1...try using 192.168.2.1

have you tried to use DHCP?

I think it is on DHCP by default.

I tried putting in 192.168.2.1 but nothing happened. What is that supposed to do?

some wireless routers require the 192.168.2.1 (Belkin does)

    it should auto-connect with DHCP

have you enabled your network connection in ubuntu?

will it connect to the network using the ubuntu cd ?

When I'm on the live cd, I have the same connection problem. It picks up the network, it works fine for a short while, and then disconnects. After that I can still see the network, but am unable to reconnect.

It appears to be connected for a split second, and then quickly disconnects.

I think the network connection is enabled, as I have manged to connect in the past. Where can I check network settings to see if it is enabled?

Are you using Ubuntu 10.10? Do you know the type of card you are using?

Do you know if you have Atheros or Broadcom card? You may need to enable Restricted Drivers.
