I am looking to get a tablet for graphic design and don't wanna spend a fortune. Any recommendations?

Since you didn't mention size (either of the writing surface or the budget), here's a good place to start comparing models, prices and user reviews:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref...ywords=graphics+tablet&ie=UTF8&qid=1293262939

Take some time to read the user reviews in detail on models you're considering. They often expose quirks a given unit may have with certain programs or operating systems you might be using.

    Hope this helps. :)

    Hi

As you mention graphic design, one question I have is what software are you using for your designs?

Just wondering if the apps/software you are using are tablet compatible, most if not all should be but its worth checking.

Me too. Any ipad alternatives out there that I should wait for? Or is the the ipad 2 going to be the only show in town?

I would be interested to know things about tablets, but for checking on FB, email, weather, apps from news channels (ABC, other) and reading books from.

There are a few out or coming out that are based on Windows 7 or Googles Android operating systems,

    Motorola Xoom

    Samsung Galaxy Tab

    HP Slate

That is basically what a tablet would be good at, if you want more then a netbook maybe the better option to go, see above links for tablets on the

    market now.

I have a laptop, but it does not always seem "handy" to hold when you are going to a park or something with kids. I have several just want reviews to search for the best. I don't want an IPAD, I just don't know. I have a laptop don't need the computer type ones, just something where I can sit and check things out if I wanted to with the family and maybe for a wow factor books. Not only am I a geek, I am a reading geek!

    Hi Rebecca J

I would as you are not leaning towards the iPad, then look at the Motorola Xoom or another of the Android OS based tablets as the Android Marketplace is slowly catching up with the Apple Apps Store in having a wide range of games and other lifestyle type apps, many are also free.

There is also books http://books.google.com/help/ebooks/android.html (again the store is building up its collection of avaiavle titles)

Just start reading alot of reviews, dont settle on the first review you see read a few of them to gain a good overall opinion on what folk think of a device.

None of the current tablets are a real alternative to the iPad 2 (yet)

    1) Apps
While there are thousands of Apps in the Android Marketplace there are mostly for Android Smartphones and not tables. On the Apple AppStore are over 65000 apps specifically designed for iPad. I think it will take 1-2 years for Google to catch up.

    2) Price
Tablets like the Motorola Xoom are more expensive then the iPad. Why buying something more expensive with less available software? ;)

If you want something that's easy to carry, don't kick the idea of a netbook to the curb just yet.

Netbooks are light, have excellent battery life (up to a true 8 hours, even with Wi-Fi turned on) and are small enough to carry anyplace you'd take a tablet.

A few other pluses for Netbooks:

    • Low price: Windows 7 netbooks start at around $250.
    • No learning a new operating system. You're likely using (and familiar with) Windows 7 now.
    • The touch and feel of a real keyboard.
    • The use and feel of a traditional mouse/touchpad.
    • Use any Internet browser you like (IE8, Mozilla, etc.) - you're not locked into one choice like on a tablet.
    • Same software, apps and file formats as your Windows PC. Type a letter in MS-Word on the netbook while in the car; print it later at home using a Workgroup connection or by transferring it to a USB flash drive.
    • The ability to backup or transfer data using a USB flash drive or external hard drive.
    • Since the screen folds down when not in use, there's less chance of damaging or scratching it when not in use.
    • If you want true on-the-go Wi-Fi, it's easy to add a USB 3G/4G data card (so long as you don't mind the $35-$50/month added cost).

Call me old-school; however I'd rather stick with tried and true technology.

Edit: Sorry I didn't read the first post....my computer didn't show it properly.
I'd say go for either an iPad or a Samsung Galaxy Tab depending on which kind of OS you like and how customizable you'd like it to be.
