I reinstalled my windows xp, everything worked well except for one problem. I cannot get online. When I try I receive the message Cannot find server. I Have a wireless router, use Ethernet from my cable. I spoke with the cable company and they said all is well from what they see. They suggested I speak with someone who is computer savey to see what the problem may be. Do you have any suggestions for me? Seems as though everything I might need to correct this problem would be on the interner. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

The wireless has an ethernet running to the modem? Or the computer has ethernet running from ?

At the command prompt type in
    ipconfig /all
If there is a value for the Gateway, can you ping it? Can you ping 4.2.2.2?

You could have lost your IP settings when you reinstalled. Usually, if you are connected to a wireless router you have DHCP which will set them automatically. The ipconfig /all will say if you are set for DHCP and if the router is providing them to you

    Hi Wadda

When you installed Windows did you also update it to latest service pack and if so what one? did you also install Security software, again if so what make and version?

Disable the security software as it may have a built in Firewall that could block you initially and/or boot to Safe Mode with Networking (F8 at boot) and see if you can connect.

I am sorry, I don't believe I have a wireless router. Sorry. The Ethernet runs from my router to my pc. I am a little confused over this. I apologize again.

I installed service pack 2. I don't have 3 on a disc. I would need to get online to get it.

    Hi

    Did you try Safe Mode?

What error message/s do you get when trying to connect to the internet and what browser are you trying, are all your drivers installed, especially the Chipset and LAN? do look in Device Manager for any yellow ! marks and let us know what they are.

What is your ISP as I'm wondering if you need specific settings for them on your PC? could also try this HERE

also please do follow the advice that handygal posted earlier as per ipconfig /all
andonce run copy and paste the info into a notepad file and save and attach that doc HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post[/quote]

    Hi wadda,

To use Safe Mode, you have to reboot the computer and press F8 when the computer is first booting up in order to access the "Safe Mode with Networking" option (keep pressing F8 while it is booting up until the options appear).

IPCONFIG is a command based module, you use it by doing the following:

Click Start, Run..., and in that Run... box type "cmd" without the quotes and press Enter.

A Command Prompt (black window with C:\Windows\System32 or the likes displayed) will open. IN that command prompt window, type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes (notice the SPACE between ipconfig and /all... that is important) and press Enter. It will then display in that command prompt all of your network connections (local and other).

Most likely during the reinstall, Windows did not find your Networking card.

Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager. See if under Network Adapters you have any card/device listed.

Is your computer a name brand that has a specific model number on a tag at the bottom? Post that and we can help find the Networking card.

I looked for network adapters. Didn't see any. My computer is a desk top Dell 8250. Is that of any assistance? Thank you

I was in the cmd screen but it kept scrolling by so fast really couldn't make out any of the addresses.

There are two Network drivers listed on the Dell site for your computer. Do you see a service tag number on a sticker somewhere on the case? Looks like 4qh87f or such. That will narrow down the two choices if you post it here.

Unfortunately, I don't see a Network card listed for that PC.

They have two drivers available. I think you can try both of them. The one that isn't right will just not install.

One and two. Hit the download button and select the download via browser option. Then you have to copy the files to your desktop using a USB memory stick or a CD.

Double click the files to run. Some Dell drivers install themselves, others you have to go to C:\Dell\drivers and find the folder that matches the number of the executable file you downloaded such as R56237 and look for the setup file in that folder and double click that.

I'll answer any questions you have.

I cannot log on to the internet to download the drivers you suggested. When I use a laptop it wants to download to the laptop. I cannot get the option to copy to flash drive.

    Thank you,

I followed the directions for safe Mode with Networking. Nothing came up on the screen when I keyed in the ipconfig /all but nothing happened. Windows IP configuration came up than C:\Documents and Settings \Administrator.arleen-c0JV02YE>ipconfig /all

    thank you,

You will need to use your laptop to download the two files. Click the download button and then select to Download via Browser. You should get a popup from your web browser asking you where to save the file. Choose a location where you can find it again. When download is complete go to the download location and copy the files over to your USB flash.

Then take the flash over to the PC and copy the two files over and Run them.

One thing to double-check is that you have a yellow mark in Device Manager.

Start>Run> type in devmgmt.msc and let us know if you have any yellow marks and what they say.

  24. wadda

    wadda Specialist

    The Yellow devices are:

Ethernet Controller - the driver for this device is not installed Code 28
Multimedia Audio Controller - the driver for this device is not installed Code 28
PCI Input Device - the driver for this device is not installed Code 28

    thank you

Okay, it still looks like you need the drivers that I had linked to earlier. You have to download and save them and transfer them to the PC as described in post #22. I can't think of anyway around it unless you have your Dell Driver disc.

I do have the driver disc that came with the computer. Tried to run it but it didn't change anything.

Was it the resource CD? When you put it in the tray it should autorun and then it should have installed a Dell program and than given you a list of what is on your computer. Under Network (NIC) Devices it should have listed the name of your LAN device either Intel 10/100 or Broadcom. Then you click Drivers at the top. Find the device in the list wither Intel or Broadcom and double click it. It should give you an option to Extract the file. Then you choose Run or follow the installation instructions.

Is that the disc you tried?

I put it in the cd player ran autorun but still cannot logon to the internet(internet explorer)

Did you go through the above steps with the resource CD? If you need help at a given screen let us know. You really are going to need go through the steps to install the network driver if you want internet access.

I am still working on this. While doing so, I went back to the beginning an ran across this information: These are the network settings that were detected before the application was run. Use these only to restore the original settings if the installation fails. THis is required only if the computer originally had a fixed IP address.

    Initial network settings.
    IP address 192.168.1.2
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 192.168.1.1

Port Address Type DHCP assigned addess

    Does this mean anything????

The resource Cd should have the drivers for your network card. So you saw that screen it had your model number and XP and in the Topic drop down box you select drivers. Now you find Network (NIC) Drivers what are your choices?

  35. wadda

    wadda Specialist

The only thing on that screen is Applications and then it lists 4 applications. There is nothing there for drivers that I can see. I put a search in for "drivers" and received the answer "there are no files on this CD which match the criteria entered"

Is that your only Dell driver CD? There are often two or three that come with the PC. One should say drivers and utilities.

    ****
Did you try downloading the original drivers from Dell website and then copying the two files over to the desktop so they could be run?

One way or the other you are going to have to get the drivers onto the PC so that you can install them.

OK I will keep working on this. I apologize for all the inconvenience I may have caused you. I do thank you for being patient with me. I will try to get the drivers online. Again thank you!

All you are going to do is download the two files in my earlier post. They will look like "R83745".exe. You copy those two files to either a CD or a USB drive and put them on the PC. Then we run them. One should work probably the Intel 10/100 one and the other will not. That will set up your network card so you can get online from the PC.
