I've been trying to update through Windows Update for the latest things it says I should get, but when I do I have to system restore.

Anyone have similar problems or advise?

So are you unable to perform the updates? Are you getting stuck somewhere in the process ? Please try to be more specific with what the exact problem is, and what you are trying to accomplish .

I can perform the updates. Let's say I'm doing

"Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Vista (KB2416400) Download size: 9.2 MB"

which came out earlier this month.

I can DL it, install it, and restart my PC. It just doesn't make it to the login screen it just goes black screen.

I just want to make sure my pc is updated as possible.

Go into your history on the update page. What is the date of the last update that was successful?

Let me see if I understand :
You ran updates, and now you are unable to use your computer due to you only being able to reach a blank/black screen upon powerup ?

Yup, I had to system restore to an earlier point to remove the update

It's hard to say since that screen shows when I put the update in, and not the date of the update. It would appear to be Late November, around the 23rd. Anything I've tried after that causes me to have to restore

    Here are December patches. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=228971
Take your computer to the update site, manually let it scan for what you need then write down the KB numbers and post them here.

At this point, do not install anything, just leave the update site.

Obviously one of those is a major problem. We'll have to see what you can safely install and what you need to avoid.

Yeah, I think by installing them one at a time, you can single out the problem. I would follow plodr's advice .

I'd install the Malicious Software Removal Tool first ;) allow it to finish scanning then create a System Restore point. Any problems, head for the Malware section of the site post haste!

I concur with satrow on the Malicious software removal tool.

I'll look over the others to see if any cause problems for people.

The first one - skip it for now because I've been reading about problems.
    KB 2416400 problems http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vistawu/thread/bbd51ac5-ba84-488f-ac17-c87de886b372

    2nd KB2447961 seems okay
3rd one is from Oct. and I'm still reading about it so hold off on that one too.

The following installed with no problem on my XP computers in Dec.
KB2296199 (but I do have a note that it might fail to install the 1st time)
    KB2305420
    KB2423089
    KB2436673

Do one at a time and reboot between each so if there is a problem, we know exactly which one of the above caused the problem.

I'll need some more time to look over the remaining updates.
