Hi everyone. I installed AVG FREE trial anti virus 2011, on Windows 7, this morning which took 200mbs. After installing, over a period of 1 and a half hours, it updated the anti virus, without giving me a notification it was doing so and ate up a further 683mb of data before I noticed what it was doing. More data actually. Thats almost one gig in total! I cant find an option to shut off updates, or only update when I give permission, and its continuing to eat up data. I connected to the net for a minute with just my home page on(its gmail log in page) to check if data was being used up if I wasnt doing anything, and it ate up 7mbs.What should I do? Uninstall? This i ridiculous its only a trial that lasts for 30 days, now I'm worried to download Avast in case it does the same thing. Am I doing something wrong because I've looked and its not showing me whats causing it? Or is this normal for an anti virus to eat up almost a gig in less than 2 hours?

    Hi and welcome to MGs

You may want to take a look at this recent thread posted by one of the site owners:

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=229347 (actually, on reread, Major Attitude edited his post concerning AVG, so maybe they are getting things fixed)

I think, from what I heard AVG was attempting to fix the issues that were going on, but I'm not sure as to the progress or if that is what's going on with your machine.

I'd also take a look at this thread written by one of our Malware Removal Experts (they have a ton of experience as far as the AV's that work the best). AVG is no longer one they recommend because of the issue people are having with it.: How to Protect yourself from malware!

Someone else may be able to come in and give you better insight as far as the problem you are having.

Please go here and download and run the AVG Removal Tool.

Then check the link that Laura gave you on How to Protect Yourself. Choose a different AV program.

Avast can be set up to ask for permission to download updates and virus definitions.

Just curious, how do you connect to the internet?
