This is my 2nd attempt at trying to run Ubunto. I failed the first time because I could not get connected to the internet.
My son has burned the latest disk for me has put it on my old Dell desktop alongside Windows (He was unsucessful in connecting to the internet too!)
In my wisdom (ha ha) I decided to put it on my eeepc STOP LAUGHING AT ME!
I now have both Windows and the latest Ubundu on my eeepc now.
When I choose Ubundu on this little laptop it shows my username and asks for my password. Why oh why, does it not accept the password????
My son has put the symbol " in the password for me.....is it anything to do with that?
I am at a loss as to how the new disk that I loaded knew my name anyway!
Can anyone tell me how to open a new user account on the mini laptop? (Or change my password to one that works?)
Maybe I shouldn't be playing around with operating systems that I don't know anything about......
I just don't want to be beaten......

    kind regards
    Onnha

    Greetings onnha :)
When you installed Ubuntu on your eeepc, during the install process it asked you "Who you are" Normally we can put what ever name we want to in that block.
It will then ask you to set up a password. Now, it is possible that one was not set up. If that is the case, when you log into Ubuntu and you click on your name. Leave the password box blank and select "login" or "Ok" (Can't remember what it is at the moment) :-D

Let us know if that works. If not, we will move on from there and even hopefully get your wireless working as well. :)

    All the best,

    Ian

    Oh thank you!!

I have had a closer look at the CD-R that my son burned for me, which was the CD that I used to install it on my eeepc (from the external hard drive....stupid laptop!! ha ha) It's v10.10(he has written it on the CD) This CD never asked me my details, it automatically added my name...(weird)
I already tried not placing a password in the box and have just tried it again....It says something like Password not Authorised....
I could always try and uninstall what is on the eeepc.....and download V10.10 from ??
why is such a simple task so difficult??
    Kind regards
    Onnha

I would recommend downloading a Live/Install CD of Ubuntu 10.10. You can get it at Distro Watch.
Burn the iso to disk and perform the install. Then you will be able to put your own name and your own password in.
I really think that will be your best bet. :)

    All the best,

What model eeepc do you have? It might be better to install a distro specifically for your netbook. There are quite a few around.
If it is like mine and only has a 4GB ssd drive then the normal Ubuntu is NOT the best choice.

Ha! That is why I have taken so long to get back to the forum!! I was unable to work out which one I needed!

I think mine is the 4GB one too! (It's so bad I keep having to use the restore disk...I was getting hacked off with the XP operating system)

Do you think Ubundu is still a good idea (considering my lack of knowledge)

    Kind regards

No. Rather than trying to install the full Ubuntu on a 4GB ssd, find something made especially for the eeepc.

    Go here: http://forum.eeeuser.com/index.php
and start reading in the sections: Beginner's Questions XP, Eee PC 70x General Discussion (if you are sure you have a 70x model; I'm not sure because I doubt both Windows and Ubuntu would not fit on a 4GB ssd) and EEEPC: Linux specifically Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu and Ubuntu Eee, Easy Peasy.

What operating system came on your netbook?

901 is a model of an ASUS netbook.
Instead of looking in the 70x section, head to the 90x section.
There are plenty of people who can answer questions and even tell you how to make the XP installed on it run better if you would prefer to keep that on.

Thanks, I have enrolled myself on that forum and asked for help. (Heck.....Meego, Easy Peasy, Slackware and Mint 7 are some of my options too?...Now that is confusing.....)

To tell you the truth I like the though of trying a different operating system. I don't see why Bill Gates should control me!

Trying another distro can be done without installing. Currently I have 4 different distros that I fire up from time to time. Mine came with Xandros/Debian and I have not changed it.

To try something else without actually affecting your Windows install, go here and grab the installer
    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
(it works better on a windows machine to start it).
That will be put on a 4GB or larger USB stick and will make the stick bootable.

Next look over the live ISOs of the different flavors of linux http://livecdlist.com/
Download what you are interested it (not on your netbook because it will use up too much space)

Fire up the Installer and point it to the ISO (in the list of choices, if you do not see what you have downloaded, the last entry is "other" or something like that).

Wait patiently while the ISO is written to your USB stick. It beats burning CDs and DVDs.

Once done, put the USB stick into a port on your netbook, turn it on and press esc. That will give you the option to boot from the USB stick. That's what you want.
It may take some time for the distro to load but eventually, you can see what this new distro looks like. If you like it, you may want to consider replacing XP; or keep XP on your netbook and fire up the USB stick when you want to browse outside of windows.

I find this to be an excellent way to do online banking. Slitaz, Damn Small Linux, or Tiny Core Linux are very small distributions with not many extras that load quickly, allow internet browsing, and can be expanded if you want.

Just another layer of security for financial transactions. FWIW...

    NOOOOOOO!!!!

I can't get onto the internet..............

    Have been trying all day.

Have booted from pendrive and it won't have it at all!!

Drat, my life is shattered! :-(

I have been on once so I know it can be done.

    Any clues?

Sorry, no. I've never looked at Easy Peasy and most versions of Ubuntu hate some of my hardware so I've never installed it.

Function + F2 turns the wireless on and off. I'm not sure if that key combo works in East Peasy but you might try it once, to be sure the wireless hardware is on.

Can you believe this??? Im online with Easy Peasy!!
I have spent 2 hours messing around and hey presto!!! Im on!!
(Just for the record - if you press Fn and F2 all the available networks disappear and when you press them again they all come back again!!!!! So it's easy to tell if the network setting is on or off!!)
Im going to stay on as long as it will let me then I'll actually put it on my eeepc for good!
Oh, PLEASE let it work this time!!!!!
    Thank you for your help!

Look down in the right where there are 4 lights on your netbook. The one fartherest to the right is blue (on my 701) when the light is shining, the internal wifi is on. When the light is off, the wifi is off.
I turn wifi off when I am watching a movie while waiting for an appointment. It saves battery time.

I'm not sure if EasyPeasy will turn the light on and off the way the default distro does.

Im a bit nervous about Fn + F2 now!! I'll leave it on!

I have noticed that there is no icon anywhere to tell you if you have the CAPs lock on or off, which has caused a few problems logging in with passwords that are typed as ********

I presume I need an antivirus.......

    here we go again...........

Sounds like you are making some headway Onnha. That is great. Honestly, and someone else on here may want to slap me. The beauty of Linux is that you don't need anti-virus. :)
I have heard great things about Easy-Peasy so I hope that it continues to work out for you. :)

    All the best,
